ISCYRA SECOND DISTRICT

2008 ANNUAL  MEETING

            MINUTES

Held: January 12th, 2008 at Gibson Island Yacht Squadron.

In Attendance(17): Bert Collins, Keith Donald, Ben Fransen, Chris Hardin, Murray Leigh, Michael Lovellette, Jack Lynch, Peter McChesney, Bob Oberg, Elliot Oldak, Rowan Perkins, Tom Price, John Sherwood, John Vanderhoff, Barbara Vosbury, Kris Wilson, and Karl von Schwarz.

The meeting was called to order about 4:30 PM by Barbara Vosbury, outgoing District Secretary.  She distributed an agenda and a proposed 2008 schedule.  She reviewed the winners for the various District trophies:

Blue Star - Pete McChesney; Green Star – Dan North; CBYRA Champion – Bob Oberg; and Travelin’ Trophy – Keith Donald

All were encouraged to join CBYRA to support the assistance they provide the member yacht clubs for race activities.  She then turned the meeting over to John Vanderhoff, the incoming District Secretary.  He lead the group’s applause for Barbara for the fine work she and Bert had done.  She will be continuing to do the results scoring for the fleets and will be running the class’s new international office off Bay Ridge Road in Annapolis.  A hand was also given to Kris Wilson for her ongoing work as District webmaster.  She requested more race articles and pictures to keep it lively.  John Sherwood commented that, for the J22 class, the winner of the regatta wrote the article.

The discussion then focused on the upcoming schedule.  The biggest issue was the selection of a site for the Districts.  After several alternatives, it was agreed to first try expanding the existing SSA weekend in September, run the Districts 9/5-6, Friday and Saturday and then have the SSA Fall Regatta 9/6-7, Saturday and Sunday races count as a separate event.  Elliot agreed to take that to SSA for their consideration. That way boats traveling to the North Americans, starting Monday, could use Sunday as a travel day.  Barbara said she was working to finalize the Fall Wind Up at TAYC 10/4-5 and the Schuster Green Star at MRYC 10/11-12.    The conflict with District 1 scheduling and the NOODS  was also discussed.  The Ned Hay, we understand, will not be held so that event weekend will be their Blue Star.  The Tri District events are: Marblehead NOOD, TAYC Fall Windup?, and ????????

Each of the fleets then gave their updated status.  For the most part, fleet numbers and involvement remain high.  The Riverton, NJ fleet was looking to host a regatta.  Other items discussed were:  Spar Tech out of business !! Keep those masts upright!!

GIYS hosting a rules seminar with Butch Ulmer on February 9th.  There was an article in ‘Sea Horse’ magazine about star sailors John Dane and Austin Sperry.  Pete McChesney asked if boats were or could be made available for potential new skippers to help expand the fleets.  At least 2 were known to be available at either SSA or MRYC.  Bob Oberg opened a discussion about the problem of OCS boats continuing on the windward leg.  Jack Lynch’s response was that because Stars don’t carry vhf radios, there is no sure way for the race committee to notify OCS boats until the windward mark.  John Vanderhoff asked about posting NORs to the website.  Barb and Kris said that they had and would continue to do so provided they were available from the host club.

The meeting concluded at 6 PM.  All thanked Murray Leigh and GIYS for their hospitality.
