Regatta Report
from the Kinzo Star World Website

Sunday August 5, 2001
Just after the skippers meeting at 10 a.m., thunder and lightning were hanging over Medemblik. Once it was time for the start, clouds had been cleared up the Dutch way, there was a wind force of 20 to 25 knots, choppy waters: in other words-- promising. Only after 6 start attempts (the 5th and 6th with the Black Flag!) the fleet was off. Sadly 20 boats were disqualified for being over the line too early.

The Olympic Champions and ruling World Champions won the first race of the series. Only yesterday Mark Reynolds said it would be difficult in these conditions, but this team started off with a first place. Beforehand, Magnus Liljedahl, Mark's crew, did not expect they would succeed in the first race. “In light air there are many more sailors who could win. On a day like today the top is much smaller. Anyway, this one is in the pocket, we won the first race!”, the champion crew told us.

Second in this race were Fredrik Lööf and Christian Finnsgard. They are the European Champions for 2001, followed in third place by Vincent Hoesch and Florian Fendt.

The Dutch team Mark Neeleman and Jos Schrier had some trouble getting to the top: “A bit of a rusty battle” coach Maurice Paardenkoper concluded. Many wind shifts on a first day like today is always a matter of getting used to in a fleet of over 100 boats. According to this coach the presence of many amateurs and lack of discipline resulted in many false starts before they could go off.

As for the result of team Neeleman / Schrier this coach tells us: “There is more in them and they will get better as the series goes on. According to Jos they could have sailed better, which meant they cannot be really satisfied with the result of today, “Too many times we chose the starboard side of the beat, which was the wrong thing to do. We got tangled up in a muddle of too many boats and could not get rid of them for clear winds. We have put our expectations to end up within the top ten, so we will have a lot to do tomorrow!”

1. USA Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liledahl
2. SWE Fredrik Loof and Christian Finnsgard
3. GER Vincent Hoesch and Florian Fendt

Watching a 1000 meter long starting line is magnificent to see, but a very heavy job to realize for the race committee. At 13.25 p.m., after the second attempt, the 105 Star boats were off. Winds were light and shifty when the boats from 26 countries started their race, of which 11 competitors come from The Netherlands.

Large wind shifts in the first beat gave a surprising outcome at the first weather mark: Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl rounded in 80th place. The Dutch team Neeleman/Schrier rounded as 30th: 'Every leg we managed to gain a couple of boats' says Mark Neeleman. They were satisfied with their boat speed and were able to sail the last beat conservatively, defending their position in the field. Eventually they finished 14th.

The Italians Andrea Racchelli and Massimiliano Ferrari took the first honor on the line, followed by the Swiss Flavio Marazzi and Kasper Harsberg. The Spanish team Jose Maria Van der Ploeg and Rafael Trujillo Villar took a third.

The protest from the jury against the Brazilian team Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira (3rd in the World's ranking) turned out disappointing to the Brazilians. They were disqualified because of hitting a mark and not doing the required 360 properly.

Tuesday, August 7, 2001
In the morning, weather was unpredictably light. It looked like it would stay this way and no race could be sailed, but eventually gave perfect sailing conditions with wind force of 4 - 5 Beaufort. After a one and a half hour postponement, the field of more than 100 stars were off at the first attempt.

The Americans Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl led the field from the first mark on, followed by a strong upcoming Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira. Mark confided in us just after the race that he was not really worried after he had rounded the first mark in first place. The gap with the rest of the fleet was quite big then already.

Third over the finishing line were Vince Brun and Mike Dorgan. The Dutch team Mark Neeleman and Jos Schrier did not get off that well but came back strongly to make up. At the first mark they were still lying in 30th place, climbed up to 17th place and finished in the 10th spot, giving them a good feeling for the series up to now.

The results after three races :

2. ESP Jose Maria Vander Ploeg and Rafael Trujillo Villar
3. USA Vincent Brun and Mike Dorgan

Thursday, August 9, 2001
After a lay day because of lack of wind two races were scheduled for Thursday. Therefore, this morning the Star Fleet had to leave the harbor at 8.30, a.m. Regrettably the wind only came in the late afternoon and the start was only at 4.45 p.m. Again, the wind showed her streaks: fluky and shifty the Race Committee and Star boats had to follow her on the course, making it very difficult for them all. With a moderate Beaufort 2 the water was flat.

The unstable weather gave many surprising changes in the field. However, Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira were ahead of the field from the first weather mark and managed to defend their position to the end. Torben said:' It was very difficult to predict what the wind would do, we needed a lot of luck.' He was disappointed that last day's race was postponed and thought today's race should have been cancelled as well.

The Dutch competitors Mark Neeleman and Jos Schrier are content with their 7th place of today. They had a good start and according to Jos, they feel good. Mark agreed and said they did well today for the overall results. It was really hard in the beginning of the race to get to the weather mark, we rounded in 60th position, but we managed to gain a lot of places on the way to the finish.' This result brought them to a 3rd place overall so far.

Overall results after 4 races:

1. USA Vincent Brun and Mike Dorgan
2. ESP Jose Maria Van der Ploeg and Rafael Trujillo Villar
3. NED Mark Neeleman and Jos Schrier

The weather conditions were great, a steady 3 to 4 Beaufort when at 14.30 o'clock the sixth and last race of the Kinzo Star Worlds 2001 took off in Medemblik, The Netherlands. The teams sailed the 5th race in the morning. It was won by the Brazilian team, Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira. The Swedish team Fredrik Lööf and Christian Finsgård ended in second position but took hold of first place overall.

In the sixth match, the team from New Zealand, Brady and Iverson, led all the way. It was their last chance for the world championship title. However, the Swedish team finished third, and consolidated their leading position overall, be it with the minimum advantage of only one point! The American team Brun and Dorgan were third overall.

Reigning world champion, Mark Reynolds, ended sixth overall. Reynolds: "I knew it was gonna be hard. There's a new winner now. I can live with that". The Dutch team Neeleman and Schrier took fifth place. Mark Neeleman: "We had a good start in the last race, we finished 6th. We sailed very stable all week. pity we didn't win one. But we are satisfied." Coach Maunce Paardenkoper agreed: "They sailed neat."

Winner Fredrik Lööf is a relatively new face in Star sailing. After the Olympics he changed from Finn to Star. At the Olympics he won a bronze medal in Finn sailing, in which he is reigning world champion too.
