President's Message
I want to remind everyone that the Log will be mailed to all paid members as of April 1 of any given year. Any member who pays dues after April 1, will have to pay the shipping cost for his or her LOG.
2026 is off and running. We had great winter season in Miami culminating with the 99th Bacardi Cup which saw 77 competitors including 14 Gold Stars, 17 nations, 10-U30 teams all mentored by some of the class’s best. Once again, the SEA program hosted two round tables during the Bacardi Cup where information was shared by the more experienced to the benefit of the eager. Apart from the obvious benefit of this sharing, the bond of our fraternity continues to strengthen. At the traditional Monday night Bacardi Party, Eddie Cutillas announced that the 100th will be sailed on Biscayne Bay, home to the Cup since 1964, well more than half of its history. This will be one for the ages so don’t miss it. If you need help with logistics, please contact our office.
In Brasil and Argentina, competitions have been frequent through their summer. Argentina is regularly getting 20 boats on the starting line. The IGC voted to pursue a indication of interest by the Buenos Aires fleet to host the 2028 World Championship. Over the next 6 months, our Executive Director Mike Hecky will work with the Argentinian Team on agreeable terms for this potential event. The intention of the IGC is to vote to approve the 2028 World Championship at the AGM in November. Going forward the goal is to approve World Championships 2 years preceding any World Championship so that Continental Championships can be scheduled strategically and efficiently.
The European season is upon us. Clinics were run by Frida at Riva del Garda all through the winter and continue this Spring. The Eastern Hemisphere Championship will be on Lake Balaton Hungry in early June and this should be convenient to many in Austria, Italy and Germany. Great to have Star sailing in Hungary in such a prominent way. Later this summer the European Championship will be held in Medemblik, Holland and this event will be big! Directly following that event, several containers have been scheduled already, (and I am sure we can accept more…shipping costs have come down), to Miami for the World Championship and the 100th Bacardi Cup. It’s not too late to join this adventure for the ages!
As always, it is my honor and privilege to serve as your President.

Paul Cayard

A Dogfight for the Ages: Cayard and Kleen Crowned 99th Bacardi Cup Champions
Cayard Ends 45-Year Pursuit in Dramatic Finale Against Scheidt
One week after the final race brought the 99th Bacardi Cup to a dramatic close in Miami, the regatta still resonates as one of the most memorable editions in recent history. After 45 years of chasing one of sailing’s most storied trophies, Paul Cayard finally secured victory, sailing alongside Frithjof Kleen to capture the iconic title.
The triumph capped an extraordinary run for the duo, who had already claimed the 2025 Star World Championship, adding another major milestone to Cayard’s legendary career.
The victory, however, came only after what many described as “a dogfight for the ages.” Heading into the final race on March 8, Cayard and Kleen were just three points ahead of Robert Scheidt and Austin Sperry, setting up a dramatic showdown on Biscayne Bay.
On that Saturday afternoon in Coconut Grove, the regatta effectively turned into a match race within a fleet race between two of the sport’s most decorated sailors.
“How often do you get to see something like that?” Cayard said afterward with a smile ashore. “When I’m dead, they’ll still be playing that one.”
Cayard vs. Scheidt Showdown
For much of the week the regatta had developed into a duel between Cayard and Scheidt.
After five days of racing, the mathematics were simple: only one of them could win. Cayard entered the final race with a three-point lead and a clear strategy. Scheidt needed to win the race or finish second, while Cayard could sail conservatively and rely on his discard.
“So when you get a situation like that, you have the opportunity to try to make it not a race,” Cayard explained. “We got on Robert and just made his life miserable basically.”
The decisive moment came ten minutes before the start, when Cayard engaged Scheidt in aggressive pre-start match racing. The battle pushed both boats far behind the fleet as the starting gun fired.
“Robert and Austin had some difficulties in the boat handling and we both crossed the line way behind the fleet, about 100 meters late,” Cayard said. “I would say 90 percent of my job was done right there.”
Both boats started deep in the pack. Cayard headed right while most of the fleet went left, keeping a close watch on his rival. At the windward mark, Cayard rounded 26th and Scheidt 30th — exactly the situation Cayard needed.
Scheidt, however, was far from finished. After finally breaking free, the Brazilian legend launched a remarkable comeback, passing boat after boat as he charged through the fleet.
On the final lap, Cayard and Kleen began to relax. Their fate now rested in Scheidt’s hands: could he climb into the top two and snatch the regatta?
Scheidt did everything he could, charging through the fleet to finish 10th overall. It was an impressive recovery — but not enough. Cayard and Kleen had done exactly what they needed to do.
The Bacardi Cup was finally theirs.
A Long-Awaited Victory
“This means a lot to me,” Cayard said after securing the title. “I’ve been chasing the Bacardi Cup for 45 years. I’ve finished second many times. It was the one thing I hadn’t won in the Star class.”
“For the first time in a long time, we have a new champion,” said Eddie Cutillas, Bacardi USA. “This victory in the Bacardi Cup is a capstone for Paul’s very successful career.”
Kleen reflected on the partnership that carried them through the week.
“What makes a dominant team is chemistry. When we sail our best, we’re pretty hard to beat.”
The German Olympian and former Bacardi Cup champion also added a dose of humor about their approach on the racecourse.
“Sometimes you have to eat some shit,” Kleen joked. “Sometimes you win with just two meters instead of two minutes. But Paul likes perfection.”
For both sailors, the victory carried significance far beyond a single regatta.
“The Star class is the most important one-design class in the world,” Kleen said. “It’s the boat, the community, the camaraderie, the tradition.”
A Historic Podium
The podium was completed by Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Bruno Prada, who secured third place after a tight final race battle with Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi.
Next year will mark the 100th Bacardi Cup, a milestone that highlights one of the longest-standing commercial partnerships in sport. For nearly a century, Bacardi has supported and preserved the traditions and camaraderie that define the Star Class fleet.
With this victory, Paul Cayard now joins the long line of champions whose names are etched into the history of the Bacardi Cup.

The Star Class Mourns the Passing of Peter Dirk Siemsen
The International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA) mourns the passing of Peter Dirk Siemsen, a towering figure in the history of the Star Class and Brazilian sailing.
Affectionately known as “Peterzão”, Siemsen dedicated his life to the Star Class, leaving an enduring mark both on and off the water. A former President of ISCYRA, widely regarded as one of the most influential in the Class’s history, he also served as Vice President of the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU), contributing significantly to the global development of the sport.
An accomplished sailor, Siemsen was a South American Star Champion and a passionate competitor across multiple disciplines, including ocean racing, where he collected numerous titles. His commitment to the Star Class extended far beyond his own achievements: he played a pivotal role in growing the fleet in Brazil by importing boats, organizing major championships, and mentoring generations of sailors.
Many of Brazil’s most prominent sailors took their first steps in the Star Class sailing on his bow, including Torben Grael, a testament to his generosity and dedication to developing talent. His legacy also lives on through his family, with his son Peter Eduardo Siemsen following in his footsteps as a Star sailor and Silver Star.
Beyond the racecourse, Siemsen served as a jury member in the America’s Cup, was a respected trademark and patent lawyer, and remained deeply involved in yacht club life, notably at Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, where he acted as an advisor for many years. He also authored a book chronicling the history of sailing in Brazil, preserving the heritage of the sport he loved.
Peter Dirk Siemsen was, in every sense, “Mr. Star”, a passionate advocate, a leader, a mentor, and a custodian of the Class traditions.
At this moment, the Star Class fleet lowers its sails in tribute. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that the values and spirit he embodied remain at the heart of the Class.
The Star Class extends its deepest condolences to the Siemsen family, to his many friends, and to the entire Brazilian sailing community.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
49er sailor Jordan Janov (USA) joined the Star Class fleet
in Miami for the 99th Bacardi Cup
At just 19 years old, Jordan Janov is already campaigning toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in the 49er class. The American sailor was the youngest skipper at the 99th Bacardi Cup in Miami at the beginning of March, stepping into the highly competitive world of Star sailing for the first time.
His presence on the starting line came through a unique opportunity: his coach in Los Angeles, Brian O’Mahoney, a long-time Star crew, arranged for Jordan to sail the event when his regular skipper, Doug Smith, was unavailable. With Smith’s support, O’Mahoney took the helm as crew and introduced Janov to the Star Class—giving the young 49er skipper a first taste of one of sailing’s most demanding and historic boats.
“Brian O’Mahoney—who’s been a long-time Star crew—is my coach back home in Los Angeles, and he’s actually the one who introduced me to Star sailing. That introduction really got me hooked on the class.
I’m still very much in the learning phase—I’m getting my butt whooped out there—but that’s part of the process. I still need to figure out how to properly use all the lines and systems on the boat, but the class has been incredible. Everyone has been super welcoming, and I’m really enjoying it.
Normally I skipper a 49er, so it’s a very different boat, but both are built to be challenging in their own way, which makes it fun. Brian’s been great—he’s definitely been pulling me around the course. Without him, it would probably be a lot tougher than it already is.
On day one at the Bacardi Cup, we managed to score a 20th in the first race. There might have been a bit of luck involved, but we’re happy to be here and looking forward to improving day by day”.

SEA Program News
Hello Star sailors! The SEA Program has had a successful winter season in Miami. We capped things off as we always do with the iconic Bacardi Cup.
As we mentioned in the last edition of the e-starlights, this winter we welcomed two newcomers to the fleet in Miami. Raul Lopez, and Drew Mouacdie each were awarded a boat for the season. They jumped right in and used their boats quite often, including competing in a couple of the events at Coral Reef Yacht Club. Exciting to see them in the boat park and falling in love with Star sailing and its community. We continue to see interest in the fleet locally at the club and surrounding area, showing us that this program is making a great impact on the potential growth of the class in one of our regatta hubs around the world.
Same as every year, our big event is the Bacardi Cup. This year, for the 99th edition, we were able to support the fleet by supplying 6 boats to the U30 initiative by Bacardi. We also spent a lot of time working on our boats to get them improved for everyone before they arrive. Our goal is to continually improve upon the state of our boats and we are thankful for all the work that each team put into their boat that they were loaned. I want to give a special thanks to Randy Draftz who generously lent us his boat, Work in Progress (8451). We continued with the long standing roundtables, with good reviews. This year we tried live streaming audio from these events. Hopefully some of you joined in on those. We will make those better as well by hopefully adding some video, and posting a recording of each session as well.
Please join me in officially welcoming Nic Pro and Brandon DePalma to the SEA Program Committee. Both have been helping the Program already so it was nice to bring them on in an official capacity. We look forward to all that they will bring to the group and help to make the program better.
Make sure to see the earlier post in e-starlights about our plans to support people for the 2026 Worlds to be held at Coral Reef Yacht Club in early November. We plan on doing a complete rework of all the boats so they are in top condition for this event. A lot of work to get done by then and it will be here before we know it. We plan to have a couple more round tables during this event, and potentially have a clinic in Miami a couple days leading up to the event.
Keep your eyes open on our class social media channels for our Worlds planning and events that we will have scheduled.
Hope everyone is looking forward to their spring and early summer sailing!
