Honoring the Past, Leading the Future

President's Message

Dear Star sailors,

Congratulations to Max Kolhoff and Ole Burzinski for winning the 2023 Star World Championship.  It was a tough championship with 100 entries including several late entries.  We only enjoyed three “race days” due to difficult wind conditions.  However, in the end, the Race Committee pulled off all six races.  Max is 30 years old and Ole is 29 years old.  They have been racing the Star only for a couple years.  Max and Ole trained with the German U-30 program and their victory underscores the value and importance of bringing new young sailors into our Class.

Consistent with this theme, Christian Nehammer provided the CMC the preliminary results of his long-range study.  The message is clear, we need to grow our Class on all levels to remain relevant and remain financially stable.  We promise a balanced budget for this year and the next year, but growth is necessary.  Growth efforts take time to take effect and now is the time to focus and extend resources to support program like the German U-30 effort.  The IGC discussed and agreed to financially support U-30 efforts on an annual basis utilizing a three-partner approach to raise the necessary funds; the Class as a 1/3 partner, the Legacy Foundation as a 1/3 partner, and raising private donations for the remaining 1/3 partner.  The Legacy Foundation is a separate entity, so the Class must solicit their support.  How to spend the money has not yet been determined and the IGC will rely upon existing U-30 regional programs for their advice and guidance.

We held our Annual General Meeting, and only one housekeeping resolution was considered.  The meeting focused on an open discussion about how best to grow our Class and many Star Class members approached the microphone to provide ideas.  Here is a list of some the ideas presented:

  • The Class must repopulate with new, younger sailors.
  • Consider adding younger sailors to the Board.
  • Fundraising and connecting with the Legacy Foundation and ISCYRA with a plan to assist youth sailors.
  • Promote the Class through events in southern Europe (ESP, POR) with a possible winter circuit.
  • Upgrade social events.
  • More communication to assist in developing youth sailors.
  • Use invitational events (with various classes) to expose other sailors to the Star.
  • Have a Class marketing manager (a current Class member with marketing experience); comment that the Class is looking for a volunteer to help with this and coordinate with Rachele Vitello and the Class office.
  • Focus on spending funds for U30 wisely and not a one-time event for sailors who may not continue with the Class.
  • Ask the TAB to look into reducing the weight of the Star, possibly a 2-part mast and other ways of reducing cost. A report in 12 months would be ideal.
  • Enrico Chieffi suggest trial sailing with 3 people on the boat in local events to possibly expand the target market
  • 2024 Worlds - need shipping & transportation assistance to get boats from Miami to San Diego.
  • Suggest dues be collected more at the fleet level.
  • Request for a copy of the 2022 YE Balance Sheet & Financial Statements.  Comment that these are available on request from the Class office.

MAX KOHLHOFF & OLE BURZINSKI WIN STAR WORLDS

The 30-year-old German sailors joined the Star Class three years ago thanks to the U30 in Kiel.

Dreams come true when you work hard for them. Max Kohlhoff and Ole Burzinski won the 2023 Star World Championship in Marina di Scarlino, Tuscany, after three years of dedication, training, and passion for sailing and for the Star boat. They started the Championship with a bullet and ended it with a golden star affixed to their mainsail, a lifelong dream for the 200+ Star sailors in Scarlino. For some, this was their 20th attempt. This year, it was Max and Ole's turn to win.
"Since we started three years ago, our goal was always to win the gold star to put on the mainsail. We believed it was possible, but it was definitely hard work... and doing it here, on our second attempt, is unbelievable!" commented Max Kohlhoff right after coming off the water. "It's hard to find words for this special moment, achieved here in Scarlino. We had some great regattas this year, always finishing second, but finally, this time it clicked, and it was the reward for our hard work."

The 2023 Star World Championship was characterized by really funny weather, with six races finally sailed in three days, and no racing at all on the first two days. The final day started with breeze from the north. The first race of the day started around 11:15 AM with 7/8 knots of wind speed, but it varied throughout the four legs, with a gentle but constant shift to the right. The 30-year-old German team Max Kohlhoff and Ole Burzinshi and the Belgian/Dutch team Manu Hens and Joost Houweling had a great start and rounded first and second at the top mark. Kohlhoff / Burzinski took over Hens / Houweling on the last downwind leg, won the race, and became the provisional overall leaders due to a poor race by the Swiss Pete Eckerd with the Portuguese crew Frederico Melo and an even worse one by Diego Negri and Alessandro Sodano (ITA). After Race Five, the discard rule came into play, so all three teams were still in the hunt for the title ahead of Race Six.

For the last race, the wind came even more from the right, 050 degrees, and the wind speed varied from as little as 5 knots to as much as 13. The best at reading it were the Irish Peter O’Leary and Steve Milne, even though the first at both the top mark and the gate were the Americans Doug Smith and Brian O’Mahony. Negri / Sodano and Eckert / Melo finished eighth and 12th, respectively, which was enough to keep them both on the podium: the Swiss/Portuguese team won silver, and the Italians took bronze.

"We had a terrific week, we sailed really well, very consistently, last day was our worst day, a very difficult one, very shifty. It always looked good, I never had bad feelings, but it was either no wind or gusts coming from the other direction. We just had something missing, so yes, it's bittersweet, but also so good!" said Piet Eckert. "It was a tricky day, a little disappointing, of course, after starting the day as leaders, but our goal was to make the top 10. We had never made the top 10 in our previous three World Championships, so finishing second is fantastic, even though we went out to win. Congratulations to Max and Ole; they did amazing today!" added Frederico Melo.

"Last year, I started the World Championship without sails, this time without my crew... Sergio Lambertenghi had a little accident to his foot, and the day before coming here, he called it off. Luckily, Alessandro was ready to step in after just a couple of days of training together this summer. This week was racing but also training at the same time, as I was teaching him how to do things for the first time on the boat. So, finishing third feels even more amazing, and it makes me think that I really know this boat well!" commented Diego Negri. "Many thanks to Diego for giving me this opportunity. It came at the very last minute, and I was so excited to join him and join the Star Class," added Alessandro Sodano.

With the prize-giving at the Yacht Club Isole di Toscana, the 2023 Star World Championship comes to a close. It will be remembered for the crazy weather, the long waits, the frustration, and the fear of not making it. Still, it will also be remembered for the excitement of having two new young Star World Champions, emerging from a successful U30 program run by Arnd Glunde in the North of Germany. This is a sign of hope for a Class that's more than 100 years old, which has seen great legends of the sport raise the 100-year-old trophy and can continue to produce champions.

100 years of Stars in Santa Barbara's
Lipton Cup
Last year at the Lipton Cup in Santa Barbara the Santa Barbara Yacht Club (SBYC) asked us to celebrate 100 years of Stars sailing in Santa Barbara by having our District (CA) Championship there in 2023. On August 5 and 6th, 16 boats gathered for what would be a predominantly light air affair.
The best breeze all weekend was found in the first race Saturday, with the wind dropping slowly over the course of the day. Day one saw Paul and Danny Cayard out in front as one of only a few boats that could manage consistent finishes. Charlie Buckingham/Payson Infelise and Eric Lidecis/Greg Smith were in hot pursuit.  Most of the rest of the group were hoping for a sixth race so they might get rid of a big number on their scorecard.
Sunday dawned even sunnier and lighter than Saturday and the Race Committee worked hard to grind out three more light air races.  George Szabo/Isao Toyama went 4, 1, 1 Sunday to take the championship by only 2 points over the Cayard’s. The throw out and consistent finishes Sunday by Nick Madigan/Mark Strube and Will Stout/Parker Mitchell moved them well up the final leaderboard to 3rd and 4th respectively. Fifth place was taken by Charlie Buckingham/Payson Infelise.
No novice sailor, but a relative novice to the Star boat, the Green Star was earned by Andrew Mason sailing with his dad Scott as crew.
From the race management to the shoreside hospitality, the entire event was managed with aplomb by the SBYC staff and the many volunteers. A larger fleet than normal created some strain on the facility but Race Director Brad Schaupeter, Regatta Chairman Rob Grant, and Rear Commodore Jeff Berkus’ efforts, among others, ensured it all ran smoothly. As a Class we are proud of our shared heritage of 100 years of Stars sailing in Santa Barbara and look forward to many more.

2023 WESTERN HEMISPHERE CHAMPIONSHIP
September 10-14

The 2023 Star Western Hemisphere Championship, presented by Morgan Stanley and the Doll Wealth Management Group, at Cleveland Yachting Club were held over the September 10-13 week with a fleet full of local and international talent which should made for exciting competition.  Notable accolades of sailors racing over the week included the likes of multiple Gold and Silver Star champions in the North American, Hemisphere, and European circuits.

After registration was complete, and many of the crew fighting to make weight enjoyed a nice meal (or two) - the fleet prepared and launched for their practice race with a start at 1300.  Conditions were light breeze with 8-12 knots oscillating  NNW. Competitors were faced with challenging conditions as the winds often contradicted the wave direction. Nevertheless a nice start to the regatta.

Each morning, competitors had a daily briefing with the PRO and Race Committee at 0830 with a scheduled 1100 start of the first race. The goal was to complete two races daily for the 4-day regatta resulting in an 8 race series. Forecasts early in the week acalled for Northerly winds with light conditions with 10 knots or less in breeze.

The fleet started on time on Tuesday with a 1100 first warning. Conditions were breezier then the day before with steady wind 10-15 knots, gusts up to 20 knots. Direction from the SW trending W throughout the day. The sailors returned to the dock with exhausted smiles and the prevailing sentiment was that this was a fun day on the water. Augie Diaz/Bruno Prada (USA/BRA) lead with a 2-1 followed by John MacCausland/Peter Sangmeister (USA) with a 1-4.  As the regatta progressed, it was close with 5 teams always in the mix.

Although it is always disappointing to have a day without racing during such an exciting regatta - it was the right call by the race committee. On the last day, the fleet progressed down the river and onto the lake for an on the water delay, and ultimately the call was made to end races for the day - marking the end of the regatta. Hats off to Carol Ewing and her entire race committee for excellent race management throughout the regatta.  The volunteerism shown both off and on the water this week was tremendous and made for an excellent experience for competitors, spectators, and race management. This is a true testament to both the Star Class and Cleveland Yachting Club as these days, it’s hard to find volunteers for great events like these - it takes a village!

U30 EUROPEANS
No Wind = no title
“Perfect weather for hiking and mountaineering,” said local meteorologist Mike Burgstaller. It's just a shame that this wonderful autumn day offered no wind for the sailors...
Such was the luck for the 21 teams showed up at Union YC - Attersee to compete for the U30 European Championship, only to be able to hold 1 race, not enough to award a title.
The one sailed race was won by the Dutch crew Pim Van Vugt and Robin Jacobs. They crossed the finish line ahead of the well-traveled team from Argentina, Martin Pedro Ferrero and Tomas Fioriti. The third fastest boat was brought over the course by Stefan Scharnagl (SC Mattsee) and Adi Lüzlbauer (UYC Attersee). Three different nations on the podium, that's a result worth seeing!

Vintage Gold Cup
Lars Grael / Mauricio Bueno win!
The Vintage Gold Cup and ISCYRA announce the final results for the 2023 Vintage Gold Cup. For the second day in a row all races were canceled; the results remain the same as after first day of racing. The winners of the 2023 Vintage Gold Cup are Brazilians Lars Grael and Mauricio Bueno with a 5-1-1 performance. Grael is now a back-to-back winner of the Vintage Gold Cup in his boat Star of the Sea.

In second place is local skipper Josh Powell and his crew Luke Lawrence of Stuart, FL with finishes of 1-8-3. In third is the Illinois team of Joe Londrigan and John Wysockey who finished 2-10-8.
The morning started out with a dense fog over the lake and no winds yet the forecast did call for light winds by 12noon. As the fog lifted, the sun came out and the wind tapered off. Two starts were attempted but both ended with general recalls. With no measurable wind nor any signs of such on the horizon, the race committee was facing a time-of-day deadline and canceled all racing for the day.
