2015 Bacardi Cup
March 2 - 8, 2015

Congratulations to the 2015 Bacardi Cup Champions, Lars Grael and Samuel Goncalves!

After a week full of near perfect Star sailing conditions, World Championship format races, and tight competition, reigning Bacardi Cup Champions International Star Class President Lars Grael and Samuel Goncalves (BRA 8474) triumphed over the fleet once again this year successfully defending their title at the 88th annual Bacardi Cup regatta.

The duo wrapped up the regatta with two race wins, the most notable of which was in Race 6, the final race of the series where Lars and Samuel closed a 4 point gap and stole the victory from fellow Brazilians Jorge Joao Zarif and Bruno Prada (BRA 8391).

Thank you to all of the event organizers, sponsors, and volunteers for running a great regatta and a special thank you to our close friends the Bacardi family and Bacardi Ltd. for keeping Star sailors well hydrated for the 88th year!

What do you consider the most difficult part of serving as a Fleet Officer?
“The most difficult task would be serving in such a mountainous fleet between Dillon and the front range of Colorado.”

Tell us your funniest Star Sailing moment/story.
“A funny story comes to mind (wasn't so funny then): on a windy day on Lake Dillon we were hit by a gust causing the boat to heal over taking on some water. With the rail in the water, the skipper, that would be me, slid right off the deck into the lake. For as tight as I could, I held on to the main sheet and the tiller while yelling for my crew to pull me back into the boat...which he did. And then we reached back to shore to dry out and go over the event to determine how it happened. For that I was awarded the title of swimming instructor.”

Tell us 3 interesting things we would be surprised to know about you.
“Here are 3 things one probably doesn’t know about me… well maybe:
          - I like to play tennis
          - I'm a retired Naval Officer
          - I have a private pilot's licence”

April Fools!

A Star sailor from District 4 created and anonymously sent a hilarious April Fools email this year about new government regulations requiring Star Boats to install lifelines. Can you imagine if we really did have to get lifelines?!

"Lifelines Now Required on Star Class Sailboats"

"Star Sailors! The U.S. Coast Guard now requires all sailboats of 20ft or more to be fitted with LIFELINES starting today, April 1, 2015! Failure to do so will result in a fine of $1000 for the first offense. (Electronic Code of Federal Regulations Title 46, Chapter 1, Subchapter C, Part 25.27a).

We have contacted the Coast Guard and received official approval for lifelines as pictured in the following diagrams:

We have tested this arrangement in the StarGeer laboratories in Springfield and also on the lake:
We now offer a complete line of stanchions, stanchion sockets, stanchion covers and plastic-covered lifeline cables. We also offer optional bow and stern pulpits. The upgrade package includes a boom vang quick release lever for downwind sailing.

We are offering a 10% discount on all lifeline upgrades ordered before July 1, so don't delay!

Contact us immediately to order so you can have a safe Spring and Summer! +1 (217) 555-8361. Pop is available to answer your questions 24/7."
