Faces Behind the Fleets

The focus of this new "Faces Behind the Fleets" segment is to give more recognition and appreciation to the International Star Class Fleet Officers who dedicate their time to serving the Class and have gone above and beyond the scope of their duties to maintain the values, traditions, and prestige of our special Star Boat and Class. Throughout the year, Fleet Officers will be featured individually to highlight them for their contributions and thank them for all of their hard work.

This eStarlights edition's "Faces Behind the Fleets" featured Fleet Officer is Anders Hogland from Nacka, Sweden. Check out his profile and a couple of excerpts from his interview below!

Anders Hogland
Life Member

Position: Fleet Captain (since 2003)

Fleet: Stockholm (SwB)
District: 10
Country: Sweden

First Star: #1625
Curent Star: #8475

Age Joined: 16 years old
Time Sailing: 55 Years

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a Fleet Officer?
“The creation of a special Star Boat center – Stockholm Star Boat Center - almost in the central part of Stockholm, where 16 Star Boats are located. We are cooperating with the local yacht club – Vikingarnas Segel Sälllskap (VSS) and are using the club´s facilities – clubhouse, crane for lifting the boats etc.”

In this day and age, what class traditions do you believe are important enough to be held on to? How do you enforce these traditions within your Fleet?
“Helping each other with almost everything, weekly sailing activities arranged in simple ways for all kind of members, for young members as well for elderly sailors and for all kind of boats. We are happy to have our weekly races together with other classes than the Star Boat.”

What is the most memorable moment from your Star sailing career in general?
Sailing with my wife as the crew during the years 1975 -1981. Especially at the international Swedish Championship 1978 when I and my wife Ann took a daily first in the last race. My wife stopped sailing with me in 1981. I think she made a wise decision, and fortunately we are still married and have been so for 50 years in 2015.
