Honoring the Past, Leading the Future

President's Message

Dear Star sailors,
The STAR racing season is in fully underway!
Lars Grael/Samuel Gonzales were the winners of the Western Hemisphere Championship and Diego Negri/Sergio Lamberthengi took their silver star at the Eastern Hemisphere Championship in Trieste in a respectable fleet of 60 teams.  At Bacardi Cup we saw an amazing fleet of 76 boats, check the top 12 teams – all premier athletes of the sailing sport .  Congratulations to all champions!

In this e-Starlight  edition we will present Rachele Vitello who joined our team as the new ISCYRA media manager. You certainly noticed on our website and the social media that we improved our media presentation by quality and quantity. Rachele will also coordinate and present the STAR class racing and activities in the local and international press and media.

The STARLOG has been finalized and will be sent to the members during the next weeks. Big thanks to Jerelyn and the Central office for the great and extensive work.

Beside all the high competive racing we will  take more care of the fleets – the foundation of our class. So one of our new projects will be supporting  fleets to gain new members or  reactivate inactive members. In this edition we will introduce some of our young talented teams.

Finally you will find some information about our next big events– the Europeans in Flensburg and the North Americans in California Yacht Club. Don’t miss the chance to race these great championships and meet  your star friends there!
See you soon on the race course!

Good sailing

Regatta Wrap-up

Bacardi Cup 2018

SENSATIONAL WEEK OF RACING AND SOCIALS

The Bacardi Cup Invitational Regatta, the annual highlight for many sailors from around the world, wrapped up in fine style on Saturday March 10th at Coral Reef Yacht Club. Winners were decided after six days and six neck and neck races for the Star Class, ending with the first Italian winners of the prestigious trophy, Diego Negri e Sergio Lambertenghi. For nearly one century, the Bacardi Cup has continued to attract the world’s top sailors and fans with its popularity and intrigue, and in 2018 celebrated its 91st anniversary on the waters of Biscayne Bay, the event’s home for the past 56 straight years. What started out as a 3-day event with less than 10 boats in 1927 in Cuba, now attracts well over 300 sailors.

As usual, the sport’s biggest names were attracted to the superb racing on offer, with the entry list teeming with super-talented World Champions, Olympians, Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup stars. Control of the leaderboard changed hands many times on the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay, with tactics crucial to take advantage of the unpredictable breeze changes and range of conditions. Both fleets completed their full slate of racing and, although there were some broken masts and scrapes along the way, the regatta maintained its acclaimed history of quality racing. The day’s highlights were recounted over outstanding hospitality, made to look effortless, by the venerable Bacardi brand, otherwise known as the ‘king of hospitality”. The nightly parties hosted at Coral Reef Yacht ClubBiscayne Bay Yacht Club and Shake a Leg Miami ensured the fun continued long after the finish line, as teams and supporters were welcomed to unwind shore side, with cocktails, tropical music and dinners.

The Bacardi Cup opened with a tribute to one of the Star Class greats, Sir Durward Knowles (BAH), who passed away aged 100 years on February 24th 2018. Paul Cayard led the dedication at the Coral Reef Yacht Club to Sir Durward, and one minute before the starting procedure for the opening race, the Star Class boats turned their bows towards Nassau in honour to Sir Durward; who enjoyed 70 years racing the Star, dedicated 31 years as Class Commodore and secured an Olympic Gold Medal.

Making history as the first ever Italian team to claim the coveted Bacardi Cup title wereDiego Negri Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA). In an invincible performance, three-time Olympian Negri and Lambertenghi remained inside the leaderboard top three from day one. Despite, by Star Class standards, having a relatively young partnership of four years, they already hold the 2014 Star European title and silver medal from the 2014 Star Worlds in their trophy cabinet. Understandably though, winning the Bacardi Cup marked a career highlight.

“A very good result and an amazing week,” exclaimed Negri. “I sailed my first Bacardi Cupin 2006 and the fleet was amazing and I had good results. Two years ago was my last edition and I was second and lost by one point and the fleet was still amazing. This time the fleet was amazing and we won. It is a good feeling”.

Second to one of the sport’s most acclaimed Olympians Robert Scheidt of Brazil, racing with Brian Fatih of the USA. Scheidt holds twelve World Championship titles and five Olympic medals, including two gold, whilst Fatih holds well over twenty years’ experience sailing the Star and counts the 2011 World Championship bronze and is a past winner of the Star Sailors League amongst his resume.

The reigning Star Class World Champions Eivind Melleby (NOR) / Joshua Revkin (USA) had to settle for third after leading early on in the series.

Prizes were also presented to winners in the following divisions: Master’s (skippers aged 50 through 59) - Arthur Anosov David Caesar (USA), Grand Masters (skippers aged 60 and above) - Augie Diaz (USA) / Bruno Prada (BRA), and Exalted Grand Masters (skippers aged 70 and above) - Alessandro Pascolato Henry Boening (BRA). The Tammy Rubin Rice Trophy was presented to Eric Doyle / Payson Infelise (USA).

Star Class - Final Overall Results after 6 Races:

1. Diego Negri / Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA) - 16 pts

2. Robert Scheidt (BRA) / Brian Fatih (USA) - 22 pts

3. Eivind Melleby (NOR) /Joshua Revkin (USA) - 24 pts

4. Lars Grael / Samuel Gonclaves (BRA) - 24 pts

5. Paul Cayard / Mark Strube (USA) - 28 pts

Western Hemisphere Championship

LARS GRAEL AND SAMUEL GONÇALVES  ARE THE WINNERS OF THE
2018 STAR WESTERN HEMISPHERE CHAMPIONSHIP

PAUL CAYARD AND TUTU LOPES FINISHED SECOND
JORGE ZARIF WITH GUILHERME DE ALMEIDA THIRD

What a finish for the 2018 Western Hemisphere Championship! Two races were sailed on the very last day, just like every other day of the week, but going on the water for the final races there was a big battle going on between Lars Grael /Samuel Gonçalves (BRA) and Paul Cayard / Arthur ‘Tutu’ Lopes (USA/BRA): only five points separated the teams the previous night and both had a chance to win the Championship.

They were fighting for positions on the racecourse and finished in second and third in the first race and in fifth and second in the secondBrazilian Finn sailor Jorge Zarif with Guilherme De Almeida were on fire today, winning both races.

Paul Cayard and Tutu Lopes were fast enough to cut the margin down to only three points, but could not match the consistency of Lars Grael and Samuel Gonçalves in this regatta.

Third on the podium are Jorge Zarif with Guilherme De Almeida, making Cayard the only non-Brazilian among the top six sailors.

“It was a tough competition with Paul, and in strong winds - declares an enthusiast Lars Grael after the price giving ceremony - we are glad of the result! It’s the seventh Silver Star event win in my life, and the second Western Hemisphere, the first one was in 2014. The night before the last day we changed the mast and chose one more suitable for strong winds and it proved a very good choice especially downwind.”

Lars Grael is also the winner in the Master category, followed by Paul Cayard second and John MacCausland in third position.

Augie Diaz / Bruno Prada (USA/BRA), fourth overall, are the winners of the Grand Master, John Dane III / Tim Ray (USA) are second and Peter Vessella / Phil Trinter(USA) third.

In the Exalted Grand Master, the winners are Larry Whipple / Antonio Tsoras (USA), with Ingvar Krook / Christoffer Lundgren (SWE) are second and Bob Teitge / Thad Brej(USA) third.

Eastern Hemisphere Championship

DIEGO NEGRI AND SERGIO LAMBERTENGHI ARE THE WINNERS

Two races were held on the last very tough day of the Star Eastern Hemisphere Championship 2018. The winds were very shifty and the PRO had a very difficult time, but luckily a fifth race was finished and teams could discard their worst score and ensured a regular championship.

The winners of the two races were Marin Misura-Tonko Barac (CRO) and Christian Nehammer-Florian Urban (AUT), seventh and eighth respectively in the overall ranking.

The victory of the Star Eastern Hemisphere Championship 2018 went to the Italian team Diego Negri-Sergio Lambertenghi, confirming a period of great form of the two in this first half of the season, following the success in the Bacardi Cup in Miami two months ago.

Negri-Lambertenghi (1-2-4-7-3 with a final score of 10 pts) managed to stay 5 points ahead of the very strong team Augie Diaz-Bruno Prada (USA/BRA) winners of 2016 Star World Championship in Miami, with Prada who boasts two Olympic medals in this class, a silver and a bronze in 2008 and 2012 Games. The young team Thomas Allart-Killian Weise (NED/GER) is third after only a couple of years racing together on a Star, they had a very great week with a total of 18 points (6-7-6-2-4).

"I am very happy for the result; luckily we managed to sail the right number of races to make this championship valid. The organization and the Yacht Club Adriaco deserved it - said Diego Negri - the weather conditions this week were extremely changeable and made the championship very tactical. We followed a rather conservative strategy and in the end, with great patience, we managed to clinch the top spot!”

Negri-Lambertenghi received the congratulations from Augie Diaz-Bruno Prada, second (2-5-3-5-9 places for a score of 15pts). "They deserved the victory with a consistent series of results - said Diaz, who added - personally, I am very happy with this second place. Every time you compete in an international championship, such as the Star Eastern Hemisphere, and you manage to step on the podium, it’s a success. The weather conditions have been really difficult, but the work and effort of the Race Committee and the Yacht Club Adriaco to make the Championship valid has been appreciated by all competitors".

North American Preview
14-19 August
There is no better place in Southern California for Star sightings than the prestigious California Yacht Club (CYC), as they prepare to host the 2018 International Star Class North American Championship  August 14 to 19.
More than 50 top sailors from around the world are expected to compete for the coveted Silver Star, emblematic of the Star Class North American Championship. Racing will take place on a challenging two-mile diameter course on Santa Monica Bay, with eight multi-lap races over four days.
“California Yacht Club has a rich history of hosting world class yachting events, and has been a longtime supporter of the Star fleet, so we’re excited to be holding this event!” said US Sailing National Race Officer and CYC Senior Race Officer Bill Stump. “In fact, the first Star Class fleet on the Pacific Coast was established in the 1920s by the founders of California Yacht Club, and venerable CYC Olympian Owen Churchill purchased one of the first boats, in the new Southern California fleet. It’s a classic yacht racing design: competitive, elegant and ageless.”
Only North American Champions may race under the Silver Star. Past victors such as Tobin Grael, George Szabo, Paul Cayard and Eric Doyle have gone on to win World Championships and Olympic Medals, as well as compete in the America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race.
Plans for the regatta have been in the works since March 2016, when the Star Class selected CYC for this premier event, based on its reputation for professional race management and excellent venue. CYC is a three-time winner of the St Peterburg Yacht Club trophy for “exceptional race management.”
REGISTRATION & DETAILS
Registration, measurement and weigh-in commence August 14. A practice race and opening ceremony are slated for August 15, followed by the eight proposed races August 16 through 19.
In addition to awards for the top five winners, and perpetual trophies, prizes will also be presented to the top three skippers and crew in both Masters (50 to 59) and Grand Masters (60 and over) divisions. Registration and event information can found at here
Competitors are encouraged to arrive early and participate in the annual King of Spain regatta the prior weekend, August 11 and 12. Visit Cal Yacht Club for details.
DISCOUNT TRANSPORT
To sweeten the deal, Rick Peters’ (AKA Starboatguy) Regatta Logistics is offering special pricing on east-west transport for 2018 Star North American competitors. The $4000 round-trip discount package is available from Miami, Fla.; the Star Boat Shop in Oxford, Md.; Moorhouse MacCausland Sailing in Lumberton, N.J.; or the North American Sailing Center in Richland, Mich.
Peters said boats can be delivered post-North Americans to the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford, Md., where the 2018 Worlds will be held in October, although “destinations can be mixed and matched.” Westbound shipping schedules allow for boats to arrive in time for CYC’s King of Spain regatta, Peters added. “We have a great summer circuit here in SoCal so come early and enjoy west coast sailing. I can arrange low cost storage and move your boat between events.” He reported 16 teams have already signed up, promising an exciting mix of competitors at the Star North Americans.
Peters is himself a Star sailor and CYC member, and has been handling logistics for the Stars and other classes for more than 20 years. For more information on this special offer visit StarBoatGuy or call (310) 720-2577.

Boat Loaner Program
Stars belong on the water – in the hands of enthusiastic sailors no matter the age.

That statement leads to probably the most unknown facet of Star sailing worldwide: the Star Boat Loaner Program.

The basic premise of this program is simple: a boat owner donates a Star to the Class Association and gets a donor letter to be used for tax deduction. That simple? YES – if you are in the USA you can benefit from an IRS 501.c.3.  Last year at the end of the Bacardi Cup I (Arnd Glunde) donated my boat 7836 to the Star Class and this year I will find out if the donation is tax deductible in Germany as well.
Cornerstones of the program in the US are:
  • Donated boats must be in race ready condition with a road worthy trailer
  • Must be a demand from applicants (sailors) in that region
  • Sailors applying must supply a CV and references
  • Sailors must sail fleet events and championships in the region
  • Sailors must maintain the boat and pay insurance for the time using the boat.
To establish a European program we need assistance to:
  • Approach coaches within clubs, country organizations to identify suitable applicants to sail loaner boats
  • Identify boat owners willing to charter their boats for specific events without ultimately donating their boat.

The Boat Loaner Program is in full swing in North America and we want to extend to Europe.

North American contact: John Chiarella
European contact: Arnd Glunde
Donate a boat for the program or recommend the program to someone new wanting to sail the Star. Details here.
