Honoring the Past, Leading the Future

President's Message

Dear Star sailors,

At the end of the season we had two more Silver Star highlights in South America in top locations:
The 2021 South American Championship was won by Robert Scheid/ Ubiratan Matos in Ilhabela/Brazil just ahead of Jorge Zarif/ Artur Lopes.

The second South American Silver Star was sailed off Buenos Aires/Argentina  and was won with five first places by Leandro and Lucas Altolaguirre. Congratulations to all!

This will be the last e-Starlights from me as your President. Sailing the Star since 1981 I served several years as European and later Vice President of the Eastern Hemisphere. In 2018 I took over from Lars Grael as President.

During the last years I have been in continuous contact with the Central Office, led by Jerelyn Biehl, and with our Executive Directors -formerly Jon VanderMolen- and now Mike Hecky: they do the main work in ISCYRA and they deserve my special thanks for the good cooperation.  Through the dedicated work in the individual departments Race Management (Carl Schellbach), Technical Committee (John MacCausland) , Measurement(Peter Moeckl and team), Judiciary Board (Doug Smith)  and Media (Rachele Vitello) the quality could be improved considerably. My special thanks go to all these people for their outstanding work.
The Star Class Legacy Foundation, established and led by Mr. Larry Whipple,  allowed ISCYRA to finance special projects and investments

Finally I would like to express my special gratitude to all ISCYRA officers for their excellent work and the good cooperation. It was a great privilege to work with you together for our beloved Star Class!

I congratulate my successor Tom Londrigan on his election and wish him the best for the future!

Today we can proudly claim that the Star Class is strong again and the premier one design keelboat in the world. The Star is the class that combines successfully  international competition and fleet /club racing - great comradeship, long time tradition, modern technique and athletic sailing.

Thus, I am glad that I could give back to the Star class and sailors something, that I have experienced all these years.
I wish you all and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Yours sincerely,

Hubert Merkelbach

100 Years of the
Star World Championships
To celebrate and commemorate this momentous occasion of the oldest and grandest one-design class, the ISCYRA is commissioning a retrospective edition book to honor our past champions, the iconic host venues, and a look to the future.

The project is quite ambitious with the goal to have the book completed to present at the Worlds to be held in September 2022 close to the site of the very first World Championship.  As of this e-starlights, all World Champions have been contacted and a few chapters have been written. Iconic and some previously unseen photos have been gathered and we're on track to have the book ready for the 2022 Worlds.

If you'd like to guarantee a copy and assist to underwrite the project through the Star Class Legacy Foundation, consider making a donation now using the button below.  Minimun donation toward the book starts at $1,000.USD

Robert Scheidt and Ubiratan Matos win the 2021 Star South American Championship in Ilhabela, Brazil

After a fierce duel against Jorge Zarif and Arthur Lopes, the two-time Olympic champion keeps his leading position

The Star South American Championship was decided on the very last day, Monday 15th, a Brazilian national holiday, at the Yacht Club de Ilhabela, on the northern coast of São Paulo. After eight balanced races, the win came in the last race for the duo Robert Scheidt and Ubiratan Matos. They were faster than their main opponents, Jorge Zarif and Arthur Lopes, since the beginning of the competition, and beat them by only two points. The bronze medal went to Juninho de Jesus and Guilherme de Almeida.

The two-time Olympic champion Robert Scheidt raced with Ubiratan Matos for the first time, and the championship marked his return to the class after more than two years away. The partnership showed regularity from the beginning to the end of the Star South American Championship. Of the eight races, the duo won three, came in second four times, and only in the last race took one sixth, which was discarded.

The two candidates for the title, were practically tied on the decisive day, but the discarding of the worst result and the average maintained by Robert and Ubiratan were fundamental for the result.

“The last day of the Star South American Championship was a very exciting day, with a lot happening. We even had some boat breakdowns and a yellow flag penalty in the first race. But in the end, we still managed to regroup and make our strategy in the decision. We were able to use the discard criteria of the worst result very well", said Robert Scheidt.

Jorge Zarif and Arthur Lopes won the first race of the day, taking a provisional lead. The champions, however, had to pay a penalty and made a recovery race, finishing the seventh race in second place.

It was in the last race that everything changed. With a fourth place for Jorge Zarif and Arthur Lopes, the title was in the hands of the helmsman owner of five Olympic medals, who finished in sixth place, a result discarded in the table. The final regatta was won by Juninho de Jesus and Guilherme de Almeida.

Ilhabela marked the third Star South American Championship for Robert Scheidt, the greatest name in Brazilian Olympic sport. Unfortunately, this time it is not a ‘Silver event’ as there wasn’t the minimum number of teams required to give away the silver star. The other titles were in 2006, with Bruno Prada, and 2018, with Arthur Lopes. Both were in Rio de Janeiro. And the first for Ubiratan Matos, one of the prominent prowlers of Brazilian sailing, not only in monotype but also in the ocean.

“Bira (Ubiratan Matos) did a great job this week and the result was worth it. He dedicated himself a lot to the boat, especially during the mast change," added Robert Scheidt.

The 51st edition of the event started on Friday, November the 12th, and gathered 10 teams formed by experienced athletes in Olympic Games, Pan-American Games and World Championships not only in the Star class, but also in other classes.

“The championship was very competitive, and the title was well deserved by Robert and Ubiratan. There were four days of strong wind and good sailing conditions in Ilhabela. After almost two years without the event due to the pandemic, we were able to organize the races. I cannot forget to thank Mitsubishi and the Yacht Club de Ilhabela, our main sponsors. Without their support, this championship would not have been possible,'' explained Tutu Lopes, competitor and organizer of the Star Class in Brazil.

The 2021 Star South American Championship was organized by the Yacht Club de Ilhabela in partnership with the Ilhabela City Hall.

INTERNATIONAL STAR CLASS LEGACY FOUNDATION
2021 HOLIDAY REPORT
Fellow Stat boat sailors and friends of the class,  it  seems this is the time of the year to reflect on things we are grateful for, and if you sail a Star boat, or are a friend of the Class we have a great deal to be  happy about. We sail the best boat on the planet, and we have the best friends in the world!! Each person makes the Class better in his or her own way.  On behalf of the Legacy Board I would like to thank all who have donated their time and money to help the Foundation and its goals of supporting the Class and supporting youth involvement.  2022  marks the fifth year since the Foundation was started. In that time we have helped the class thru some tough post-Olympic times, and now we see the Class on the rebound as was evidenced by this year’s Worlds in Germany. The Foundation hosted the 1st ever U-30 Worlds Championship in Miami with 19 nations represented. Plans are in the works for a 2nd U-30 Worlds in early  2023. We have also sponsored youth in regattas throughout the world and will continue to do so.   As we all know, this coming year  is also the 100th year of the Star Class World Championships!!

To those of you who have helped the Foundation a huge THANK YOU!  Going forward we plan a district by district campaign to get youth involved in local regattas. The founding fathers of the Class realized that the fleets and hence the districts are the core of the Class. We want to move in that direction to see growth in the Class as a whole. Going forward in this 100
th  Worlds year we hope that each of you would consider helping out in any way you see fit. We are open to any ideas and welcome them at any time. The Foundation has been, and will continue to be  active in donating boats, sails and equipment to youth.  At the Worlds in Marblehead this coming September we will be active in supporting young sailors. Please consider a donation at any time, and for those countries where December is a tax deduction month on income this would be a great time to help out. Please reach out to any of the Foundation Board members with your thoughts, we value your input. If you have a specific idea as to where your donation may be used we can certainly give that consideration. Once again to those who have donated your gift is treasured by all.   Here is hoping you  hit all the lifts  in 2022………….

Thank you,

Larry Whipple

STAR SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE CHAMPIONSHIP 2021
Leandro and Lucas Altolaguirre are the winners

The Altolaguirre brothers, Leandro and Lucas are the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Champions! They earned their first Silver Star after an amazing scorecard of five bullets out of eight races and a huge 24-point margin over the second team, Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro, and 25 over the third, Fabian Mac Gowan with Nicolas Rosas.

The Championship, organized in Buenos Aires by Club Nautico Olivos and the ISCYRA, ended yesterday, December 12th, with two more races, reaching the scheduled total of eight. The first race of the day was sailed with an offshore breeze of 12/15 knots at the start that increased up to 18/20 towards the end. There was a strong threat of ‘Pampero’ on the racecourse – a local wind that generally comes with a storm – but luckily it wasn’t the case.
The race was close between Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro and Alberto Zanetti with Gustavo Warburg and the Altolaguirre Brothers. They rounded the first windward mark in this exact order. Over the last three legs their positions changed and only in the last downwind Zanetti/Warburg extended enough to win the race, while the Altolaguirres finished in second place and were able to celebrate the win of their first Silver Star.

Leandro Altolaguirre: “I am very happy for the last day, there was very shifty wind from shore, but we managed to finish second in the first race of the day to mathematically win the championship, so we decided to spare the boat another race and we headed back in the harbor”.
Lucas Altolaguirre: “I am super happy to have won this event, and honestly it took a long time and lots of work to get here. We were quite consistent this week and it allowed us to skip the last race and enjoy our very first Silver Star”.

The second and last race was sailed with a little less wind, about 10/12 knots, that was much shiftier than on the previous one. Again, Peisajovich/Ciro were first at the top mark with Fabian Mac Gowan and Nicolas Rosas following in second and Julio Alsogaray and Lucas Carisimi rounding third. The race had some strong shifts in wind direction that affected the positions of the fleet. Mac Gowan/Rosas were able to win the last race, Hernán Monez Ruiz with Juan Ignacio Morand were second and Mariano Cambon with Guillermo Aporszegi third.

The successful week of sailing in Argentina ended with the traditional prizegiving. A Silver Star was awarded and the organizers of Club Nautico Olivos hope to see you all on the Rio de la Plata, the Silver River.
