The Austrian Christian Nehammer and Florian Urban are the winners of the 32nd Coppa Tito Nordio, historical regatta for the Starclass taking place in the Gulf of Trieste waters the last weekend of April.
This crew contains a lot of history: Nehammer, the skipper, started racing in Star as a crew of the father of Florian. Moreover, he won the Nordio Cup already in
2001 as a crew of Austrian sailing legend Hubert Raudaschl (two silver medals and nine participations to the Olympic Games!).
The strong crew from Wien has ruled 27 boats coming from 6 different countries: among them there was the american Jack Jennings from Chicago, who came in preparation of the Worlds that will take place in Denmark. With him sailed his very strong crew Frithjof “Frida” Kleen, already world champion in 2014. It was this team that suffered from a bad collision happened in a crossing. They were forced to leave the race field in advance.
Four races have been sailed with a variable “bora” wind (the typical local wind), that blew sometimes strong some other moderate, producing very technical races. The first day the
austrian Hoferer-Bachitsch prevailed, and then a second race was cancelled at the last leg when the wind dropped suddenly.
In the second day three races were completed under a bright sunshine and a strong and gusty wind that punched the sailors. All were won by Nehammer-Urban that dominated showing in these conditions better speed compared to the rest of the fleet. The third day instead the wind was too weak, thus preventing the progress of the last race scheduled.
Ashore there was a good feeling among all the teams, promoted by the “pasta party & free beer” the first day, and by the gala dinner in the lounge of Yacht Club Adriaco the second day.
The Race Organizer, the Yacht Club Adriaco, was very satisfied, supported by the main sponsor Banca Generali Financial Planner and by Edi Kante and Illy Caffè. Also the
local fleet was satisfied: Gughi Danelon, fleet captain, took the second place with Mattia Gazzetta as crew. Prizes went also to the winners in the categories Master (Danelon), Grand Master (Passegger) and Exalted Grand Master (Sturm).
The traditional friendship between the fleet of Trieste and that of Austria-Carinthia this year is strengthened thanks to the initiative of Portopiccolo, that sponsored the Starclass Spring Series, a circuit of 4 regattas during springtime, two in the Gulf of Trieste and two in the Carinthian lakes. The final event and prizegiving of the series will take place in Portopiccolo next 20-21 May.
