The Baxter Bowl, the traditional second event of the District 5 SoCal swing was held June 17th & 18th, hosted by the Newport Harbor Fleet and NHYC. In stark contrast to the 15 to 20 knot conditions of 2016, this year's installment was more typical of Newport Beach. Six races were held west of the Newport Pier with 6 to 8 knots on Saturday and marginally less breeze on Sunday. Shifty conditions challenged the 10 boat fleet and kept score lines close with the top three boats within 3 points of each other. Jim Buckingham and Craig Moss (pictured) prevailed by one point over Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel, and two points over Nick Madigan and David Wood. Jim's son Charlie sailing with Rick Peters were close behind in fourth place. Sunday, June 18 brought a Father's Day “Smack Down” with six of 10 teams being pairs of father/son skippers. Shown in the attached Father’s Day photo are (l to r) Jim and Charlie Buckingham, Nick and Michael Madigan, and Chuck and Chas Beek. Thank you to the NHYC Race Committee and staff! Maybe next year they’ll actually have a clubhouse!!
