Star sailors are taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race

Six Star sailors are taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race, an around the world race of 37,000 miles.

The race started in October 2008 and ends nine months later in St. Petersburg, Russia in June 2009. Stops along the way are in Cape Town, South Africa; Kochi, India; Singapore; Qingdao, China; and then around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Boston, USA; Galway, Ireland; Goteborg and Stockholm, Sweden. There are seven entries in the race, with four of these being skippered by Star sailors.

Star World Champion and double Olympic Gold Medalist (2004 and 1996) Torben Grael is the skipper of Ericsson 4. He was also the skipper of Brasil 1 in the previous race in 2005-2006. Andreas Hanakamp, a two time Star Olympic sailor from Austria (1996 and 2004), is the skipper of Team Russia, and Roberto Bermudez of Spain, also a Star Olympic sailor (2004), is skipper of Delta Lloyd. Sailing on Delta Lloyd with him is Peter Van Niekerk from The Netherlands who sailed in the Star in the 2004 Olympics. Ian Walker, British Star Olympic Silver Medalist (2000), is the skipper of Green Dragon. Eivind Melleby from Norway is a helmsman on Ericsson 3.
