You know....it's always great sailing in the fall on the Chesapeake. The skies are crystal clear, the geese are flying south (as we all should be), you can see your breath in the morning, the dew is thick and the breeze is usually up. This was the case for this years D2 Blue Star, held at Miles River Yacht Club on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake. A great fleet of 19 came out for 1. a great weekend of racing, 2. a chance to qualify for the 2008 Worlds, and 3. a chance to catch up with some old friends and do some down to earth plain old socializing. The wind proved to be as challenging as a WNW breeze can be with leads in races switched as quickly as a Star can tack. If you caught the right shift in the right place you were 20 boat lengths in front (as Karen Wiley Alt can attest), if you missed it...well it was still a beautiful day to be sailing with your buds! Racing was tight even with all the switching around and there were four different winners of the five races. Five skippers (Henry Filter, Keith Donald, Mark Oberg, Ben Fransen, Karen Wiley Alt) won their first Blue Chevrons, Bob Oberg increased his from one to two. Pete McChesney and Shane Zwingelberg won the Blue Star, but this was not without challenge. Pete had one bad race to throw out and Henry Filter had none. A little match racing ensued with Henry holding Pete from starting the last race for a full minute. They broke away and came back together on the last leg to have Henry do everything possible to push Pete back in the standings. I believe he only needed one boat and it was looking like Ben Fransen was the boat. But, as shift would have it, Ben never got the right shift at the right time for Henry's plan to work. Oh well. Thank you Henry for showing how that game is played. It was really fun watching. Thank you's to Ernie Becker and his Race Committee for doing a fine job in trying conditions and to Bob Flower, Bob Bradford and the MES Fleet for putting the event together and being great hosts. |
