2008 Rollins Bowl

The Rollins Bowl -- the first regatta in the D5IVE High Point Series, was held May 31 - June 1 at San Diego YC. Though a small fleet, the racing was very close, requiring the race committee to use a trigger finger on some finishes -- beep, beep, beep as fast as possible. At the end of the weekend, the regatta winner would be whoever of Szabo/Peters and Macdonald/Fatih beat the other in Race 5. The two boats were knotted with 1-1-2-2 finishes. A third of the way up the first beat of the last race, Szabo/Peters relinquished a slim lead on Macdonald/Fatih when a slight and unreliable "lefty" came in for about five minutes, putting Macdonald/Fatih ahead to stay. Rounding out the top FIVE were Lidecis/Marzahl, Buckingham/Monroe and Driscoll/Oberg. A great Saturday evening party was hosted by Ruth Rollins at her home, with Star luminaries in attendance, including Lowell North, Mark Reynolds, Mark Mendelblatt and Austin Sperry -- all US Olympians.
