| Article on the Murphy brothers and Lake Hopatcong from NJ.com. Report by Jessica Kitchin:
Merriman Wins Tomahawk Regatta on Lake Hopatcong The two-day Star regatta was held out of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club. Merriman, a former U.S. Youth Singlehanded champion and Etchells world champion who lives in New York City, finished in the top three in all five races—winning the first two—to end the weekend with nine points and the first-place trophy. Peter Bromby, the reigning Bacardi Cup champion and multiple Olympian from Bermuda who won the Tomahawk last year, finished with 12 points, sailing with East Hanover’s Brian Murphy. Mark Reynolds, who has won two gold medals and one silver in the Olympics, hails from San Diego and sailed with Kevin Murphy of Madison. He finished with 13 points, winning both races on Sunday, to finish third. Eighteen Stars competed over the weekend in moderate breeze on Saturday and heavier winds on Sunday. Both days included wind shifts that are typical of Lake Hopatcong. The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club is the second-oldest inland yacht club in the country, dating back to 1905, and is on the National and New Jersey registers of historic places. Stars are one of four classes to compete out of the club every Sunday. |
