In addition to Lars Grael and Renato Moura four other pairs qualified for the world championship They are, in the order of ranking in the event, Gastão Brun / Marco Grael, Andrew Mirsky / Mauricio Bueno, Alessandro Pascolato / Henry Boening, and Peter Ficker / Ubiratan Matos. Horacio Carabelli, a member of the crew of Torben Grael (who leads the Volvo Ocean Race as skipper on the Swedish boat Ericsson 4,) sailing in Brasilia with the experienced crew Ronald Seifert, finished the championship in sixth place after breaking his mast in the second race on Saturday when the gusts were at20 knots. “My goal was to win a place for the worlds and I also can do that by qualifying from the Rio de Janeiro fleet in spite of finishing the sixth here in the districts.
