| Sailed at Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, Quebec. Top master was Brian Cramer, first Grand Master was Rick Burgess, and the best Exalted Master was John Chiarella. The Green Star winner was Harry Palm.
Report by Brian Cramer: Racing began on Friday after a couple of hours delay in a building but light breeze. The race committee set up for a westerly course but low water in the Lake put the start too close to some shallow rocks as Mark Passmore soon discovered the HARD way. A little adjustment with the line and away we went for the first race. Andy Ivey demonstrated his skills and led the fleet around the course always protecting his lead from the closest competitor. Andy has won the Districts four previous times so this performance looked normal. A second race was also completed on Friday with Andy making some smart decisions on the second beat to move into second at the finish. Friday night looked like a repeat of Andy's win in 1997. Saturday started the day a little cold but with a steady 12kts of wind from the north west, the anticipation was high for some quality racing. The "heavy weight team" from Toronto of Brian McKay and Michelle Tan claimed that this wind condition was their kind of day. The fleet came off the line in true big fleet "Bacardi" style, lined up and charging. Mark Passmore had some of the previous days' damage repaired - enough to sail the first race leading when it mattered - at the finish line. Local fleet member Will Hendershot showed great speed and smarts to stay in second at the finish. Will's performance also gave the rest of the 12th District a lesson in upgrading from a 6000 series to 7000 series Star. More from Will in the second race of the day. The second Saturday race was a little one sided as Brian and Matt sailed mostly the left and arrived at the windward mark in clear air, setting up for a couple of legs covering the fleet. Will proved that the morning race was nothing special as he repeated his second place finish. Mark and Roger passed a pack of boats on the second downwind finishing third and setting up the final race between the three top competitors. The forecast for Sunday was not good so the race committee signaled for the fifth and final race of the Championship to be held mid Saturday afternoon. Three competitors thought they could win the regatta and in the pre-start worked around each other. One general recall increased the tension but with the final start each of the three chose their course. Brian and Matt were forced left off the line while Mark and Andy went right. Sometimes good things happen for all the wrong reasons and once again the left side paid big time. This time John Chiarella/Bob Carlson and Rick Burgess/Josh Asermaily followed on the left side of the course and rounded in second and third position. A couple of good tacks/jibes and mark roundings got Rick passed John by the fifth and final leg of the race. The regatta was completed after a great dinner and award presentation held at the club restaurant. Many thanks go to the Quebec Fleet for hosting with special mention of Phillipe Hofer and Will Hendershot for providing an excellent event. |
