Four windward-leeward races were sailed on Saturday. The upwind legs were sailed with the current and were relatively straight forward. The challenge was downwind, choosing to stay close to shore and risk losing the wind or sailing in steadier breeze but yet stronger adverse current. One thing I’ve notice about Riverton, there is no such thing as a solid position. All competitors had at least one race of finishing first as well as last. Keith Donald led the first race and that turned out to be a disadvantage having gone to the wrong turning mark. That gave the first race to Sam Hopkins. The second race had several position changes resulting in Joe Pro getting the gun, followed by Keith Donald then Sam Hopkins. For the remaining two races of the day, Sam and Keith each had their moment. Sam smartly out-sailed Keith in the last hundred yards of the last race to take the bullet.

The day finished off with the traditional BBQ and party with live music. Sunday started with lighter than expected wind but we did manage to get around the course and off the water by noon. Congratulations to Sam Hopkins with crew Steve Marshall for winning this year’s Riverton regatta. Second place went to Keith Donald with crew Jill Lewis (Saturday) and Bogna Pro (Sunday). In third place was our host Joe Pro and his son Nick crewing for him.
