The Team of Collins/Doyle Win the 80th Running of the Chesapeake Bay Lipton Cup |
| |
| The 80th running of the Chesapeake Bay Lipton Cup took place in the Choptank with an unsettled low pressure weather system. On Saturday we had 10 -15 knot breezes from the South with occasional higher gusts. Laura and father, Read Beigel, played the right side on the first beat and led wire to wire. On the second race Collins/ Doyle edged out Vanderhoff/Dolezal for the win and on the third race Weissenberger/Hardin picked up a shift on the second beat for the win. While the wind was not that strong, the fleet suffered a broken mast, bent mast, broken pole, bent pole. It was said that there is a reason it is called the Choptank. Big air and waves on Sunday, so the racing was postponed until about noon and the course was moved to the flatter, protected water of the Tred Avon River. One race was sailed in about 8-12 knots with many thunderstorms threatening. Weissenberger/Hardin had a nice start and led the race all the way to the finish. Lippincott/Zuschnitt finished 2nd and Collins/Doyle placed 3rd. There was a 90 degree right shift about 1/2 way down the last leg which continued to go right and a major t-storm was threatening with a fair bit of lightning. So, after a brief delay, racing was abandoned and the fleet sailed in to the Tred Avon Yacht Club in a heavy downpour. By the time the boats were disassembled and packed the rain stopped and the sun returned for the trophy presentation at Harleigh. |
