John MacCausland and Rick Burgess Win the 2011 Fall Windup |

This year the 2011 Annual Fall Windup was expanded to a three day event to provide a venue for our District 2 Centennial Celebration. Informal races for woodies/classics took place just off the Tred Avon Yacht Club early Friday evening. Rowan Perkins and Keith Donald brought their woodies (4125 & 4450) enabling a handful of Star sailors to man these boats for four races in a gentle breeze. Later in the evening, movies of past Star racing were played at the bar and, with ingenuity, Keith Donald awarded six trophies for these races. Well, Friday was the last of the warm weather and light breezes. The temperature dropped about twenty and the wind went up about 20 (in the gusts). The first race on Saturday was sailed in the Choptank. The wind and sea conditions took its toll on the Star boats, so the rest of the day's racing was conducted in the Tred Avon River where there was less breeze and flat water conditions. Plentiful Surf & Turf was provided by the club Saturday evening and John Sherwood, our keynote speaker, related his 60+ years of world class Star sailing experiences. The podium was then open to anyone who wished to relate some Star sailing stories and thoughts. Movies of past Star races and other class races were shown as the evening wound down. Sunday, the breeze was still up and it was colder. A vote was taken about where to sail. The majority voted to again sail in the more protected waters of the Tred Avon River. Two races were sailed and the team of John MacCausland and Rick Burgess held strong for the win of the series. Ben Sternberg and Donny Massey had the best scores for Sunday and finished second. Mike Hecky and Matt Boudreau sailed very well for a third. Many thanks to Keith Donald, Bert Collins and Andrew Parish for organizing the event. Thanks to Richard and Pucky Lippincott, supported by members of the Tred Avon Yacht Club, for the race committee work and photographic coverage. |
