| 2011 12th District Championship – Port Credit Yacht Club, Toronto Ontario. Report by Brian Cramer. A three day racing weekend should begin with a practice race on Thursday. Too much rain and too little wind for our fleet at the time when we should have been out on the lake enjoying a set-up race for our District Championship. Bad start but the best was to follow. When the racing began on Friday, there was an excellent 10 knot breeze at 255 degrees for all the competitors to enjoy. Mark Passmore won the first race by a great margin with Terry Line moving from second to winner in the second and final race of the day. Saturday dawned with less rain and more clear skies with another good forecast for wind and waves. During the day, the wind increased and on the final weather leg of the first race reached 12 knots. Very good conditions to score during a District Championship. Terry and Larry Scott ran away with the first race of the day by staying in clear air and staying in phase as the boats approached the weather mark. Tough to beat but great to watch. In the final race on Saturday, the PRO signaled a course 3 with 10 knots of wind. By leg three of the race Hans Fogh led with Brian Cramer hot on his stern. The final downwind included two lead changes with Hans rounding in front at the last leeward mark. For the final 1 ½ miles the two competitors tacked away and then together with the lead changing three times. Hans drew from a couple of Olympic medal competitions to position himself aimed at the committee boat end and ahead by feet at the finish. Two days of racing and four competitors could win the regatta. The 5th and final race was prepared on Sunday at a course of 355 degrees or directly toward shore. Course 3 was signaled by the PRO and the starting sequence began. One of the four potential winners was OCS and returned to clear the line. Terry Line and Brian Cramer tacked and covered each other to the weather mark and down to the leeward turn. By the second weather leg there was a lead change in Cramer’s favour but Matt Johnston had done the math. To win the regatta, Cramer and Line had to be separated by one boat. Fogh was gaining and Cramer executed the plan to slow Line and get one boat in between. The sailing chess game was exciting to watch as the three boats crossed and covered each with their own agenda until the final 30 feet. Line tacked under his closest competitor and this forced the legend Hans Fogh to tack away and sprint to the finish. Line/Scott beat Fogh/Cheer by 1 ½ feet to finish second and win the regatta. Great facility at Port Credit Yacht Club. The Race committee led by John Weakley did a splendid job. Judges, Andy Wardle and Pat Lymburner provided excellent support both on the water and off. Fantastic finish to a great regatta. |
