Polish Crew Leading After Race One:
Day One: Strong wind (20 knots) for the first race of the Star European Championship. Many retirements, due to the particular conditions of the sea. A strong East wind, around 20 knots, has characterized Race one of the Star European Championship / Casino Cup run today at Sanremo, Italy. After a particularly difficult race, with some retirements, the first place of the standings is occupied by Poland's (Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki. Second place is the Germans, Johannes Polgar and Markus Koy and third place the Swedes Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen.

Among the many sailors that are taking part in the Star European Championship, Kusznierewicz / Zycki, and Loof / Salminen, have been already qualified for the next Olympic Games. Besides them, others qualified for London 2012 are the Germans Robert Stanjek and Frithjof Kleen (fourth place for them today), the Norwegians Sigurd Eivind Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen (fifth place today) and the Portuguese Alfonso Domingos and Federico Melo (tenth). Diego Negri and Enrico Voltolini, European Champions in 2011, are now in sixth place.

The opening ceremony of the Championship took place yesterday at Porto Vesco, with the young pupils of the Sanremo Sailing School in a primary role when raising the flags of the nineteen countries which are taking part in the Championship. The ceremony was particularly moving and involved the whole fleet that, despite the rain, attended the ceremony from the quay.

Tonight all competitors will be guests of the Sanremo Royal Hotel for the cocktail party.

Day Two, Races Two and Three:
Two races were run today for the Star European Championship / Casino Cup, with wind around eight knots. Poland's Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki, Star World champions in 2008, kept the lead they have had the first race on Sunday.

In race two and three they finished third and second, now having a total of six points, exactly half of the points of the second place team, Swedes Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen. Third place, in the overall standings, are Norwegians Sigurd Melleby Eivind and Morland Pedersen Petter, improving their ranking from Sunday's standings. In fourth place are the Portuguese Alfonso Domingos and Federico Melo, who won race three, while Italians Diego Negri and Enrico Voltolini moved up and are now fifth.

Common opinion of almost all sailors taking part in the Star European Championship is that races are being run in extremely difficult and various conditions of sea and winds and that every minimal mistake can cause delays and gaps that are hard to overcome. Clear proof of the risk is what happened to Germans Robert Stanjek and Frithjof Kleen who, despite their victory in race two, moved down to seventh place, due to a poor placing in race three.

Day three was spent ashore, by the crews taking part in the Star European Championship – Casino Cup, due to the lack of wind which forced the Committee to cancel today’s races.

In the evening the Sanremo Casino was the host of the Championship Gala and the middle-championship Prize Awarding Ceremony. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the first three races run so far: Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki, winners of Race One, Germans Robert Stanijek and Frithjof Kleen,, first in Race Two, and Portuguese Alfonso Domingos and Federico Melo, winners of Race Three. During the ceremony, special career prizes were be awarded to the Olympic champions, now present at the European Championship as trainers, Valentin Mankin and Mark Reynolds.

Day Four: Diego Negri and Enrico Voltolini won race four of the Star Class European Championship– Casino Cup. The weather put the crews of the Star European Championship under heavy pressure. The day started under bright sunshine but more than once the lack of wind made the participants fear a possible cancellation of the race.

At 11 am, however, weather conditions had improved and the starting procedures could begin, thanks to a southwest wind of about six knots, that strengthened progressively up to twenty knots, with formed waves.

After the end of the first race of today, all the crews returned ashore, waiting for the decisions of the Committee upon the possibility of starting another race. The Race Authorities were very careful in making their decision, for a worsening of the sea conditions and an excessive strengthening of the wind were expected, and happened in the afternoon. Due to the worsened weather conditions no other race was run.

After Race Four, Poland’s Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki are still at the top, with thirteen points; second place are Swedes Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen, who reduced their gap to first place, while the third is occupied by Norwegians Sigurd Eivind Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen. Italians Diego Negri and Enrico Voltolini moved up to fourth place, at only two points from the podium, while in fifth place are the Danes Michael Hestbek and Claus Olesen.

Day Five
Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki, former World Champions in 2008 and trained by the twice Olympic champion Mark Reynolds, are the European Star Class Champions for year 2012. After their victory in Race One and the positive places got in all the following regattas, they have always been at the top of the standings and finally conquered the title.

Second place, also in this case with no surprises in the last race, are Swedes Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen. Third place are Norwegians Elvind Sigurd Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen. Fourth place for Portuguese Alfonso Domingos and Federico Melo, and fifth rank for Italians Diego Negri and Enrico Voltolini, who won Race 4; sixth are Danes Michael Hestbek and Claus Olesen.

On Day Five of the European Championship the fifth race, won by Ukrainians Denis Khashina and Dmitry Mechetin, was run despite the uncertain weather conditions that tried Regatta Committee and participants severely.
