| Sailed at Coloma, Michigan, USA. The forecast was wrong! Well, for most of the weekend, and that was good news. Saturday morning started with temperatures in the 30's, and drizzle moved in before the first start. Winds were ESE 6-12, with puffs to 15. It drizzled intermittently in the first race, pretty well stopped for the 2nd and 3rd, the skies opened up for the 4th, and then had light rain in the 5th race. As the day went on the wind went to the south and nearly southwest for the 5th race of the day. Paw Paw Lake new Star sailor Deane Fizzell handled the challenging conditions well, aside from one gybe at the leeward mark in the 4th race. His crew, Tim Spurr, didn't quite have the whisker pole down, the boom came over and he got brushed over the side. Neal Turluck was coming into the leeward mark, saw Tim go into the water, and sailed up in the cold air and water conditions, and helped Tim out of the water. Turluck then sailed over to Fizzell's boat and Spurr climbed back aboard. Turluck filed for and was granted redress for the rescue. What a difference a day made! Sunday morning had a dire forecast as well. It was 65 degrees, partly sunny, and winds sustained at 14, and gusty 18-24. Two more races were sailed. All courses were Windward-Leeward twice around. |
