Final results for seven races on January 10-13. The first day of the Star Midwinter Championship saw its share of carnage while rolling through two races in 15-20 knots. Over a third of the fleet was unable to finish the first race, with two broken masts among the casualties. Stuart Hebb/ Mike Wolfs (CAN) are the early leaders with a 4-2, followed closely by Augie Diaz/ Arnis Baltins (USA) with a 1-6. Final report: Youth Provides The Thrills, Experience Wins The Day Diaz Takes Gold While 20-Somethings Win, Place In Final Race Coconut Grove, FL (January 13, 2013): Biscayne Bay provided the 4th straight day of perfect racing conditions for the Star Mid-Winter Championship on Sunday, with Cuban-born Miami local Augie Diaz taking the overall victory by 11 points over San Francisco's Peter Vesella. The 58-year old Diaz, along with crew Arnis Baltins, continued a streak of consistently strong finishes, taking a 5th place on Sunday's single, final race of the event. Diaz won 3 of the 7 races in the regatta, and his worst score was a 6th; this was in marked contrast to the score of George Szabo, Diaz's constant rival throughout the 2013 season. Szabo, along with Olympic Gold Medal crew Magnus Liljedahl, finished a dismal 9th after scoring an OCS in Race 1 and suffering an equipment failure in the final race. "This was not an easy regatta to win, and we were the beneficiaries of a lot of good luck during a hard-fought week," said Diaz. "Arnis was incredible on the bow; only after the final race did I find out he'd been sick for the entire event." Diaz moves into second place behind Arthur Anosov in the overall standings for the inaugural Star Winter Series Presented By EFG International after four events. While Diaz's consistency was the story of the regatta, the two youngest skippers in the fleet provided all the excitement on the final day of racing, especially after they learned of the friendly wagers placed on them by the more mature members of the fleet. Spectators cheered on 24-year old Tomas Hornos, along with 22-year old crew Josh Revkin, as they sailed a brilliant first beat in a gorgeous 16 knots of Southeasterly trade wind to lead the fleet around the top mark, holding his lead for two more legs. 3 boats back, 22-year old Swede Philip Carlson, along with 22-year old Finn sailor Luke Lawrence, rounded the mark in pursuit, and the battle was on. Carlson attacked again and again, Hornos attempting to defend, but the Swede powered down the final run to surge ahead at the gate, rounding ahead by a length. Tack for tack they fought, match racing up the final beat to the finish, with both crews straight-leg hiking for the tiniest advantage. Hornos couldn't break from Carlson's tightening grip, and the young Swede took the final gun by a half a boatlength to the cheers of the spectating fleet which included Carlson's father and longtime coach, Gerhard. "This has made a month long trip to Miami that much better for all of us," he said proudly. Heroic final race aside, Hornos' consistency trumped Carlson's speed, with the Argentine/American winning the 'junior heavyweight' battle by just 4 points. Hornos finished 7th, and Carlson 8th. |
