| 51st Oktoberfestregatta for the Konsul–van–
Kempen Challenge Trophy. Report by Martin Eckel:
The 51st Oktoberfestregatta 2012 was organized by the “Herrschinger Segelclub” and the hosting fleet Andechser Flotte AND at Lake Ammersee during the 202nd Oktoberfest in Munich. After the death of the Honorable Konsul van Kempen in 2008 a new and valuable trophy, a silver star boat model, was donated by the family van Kempen as a perpetual prize. 56 entries came from 8 nations (Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy and Germany) came for the Oktoberfestregatta, which traditionally is a end of the season highlight and one of the biggest race series of its kind in Europe. As in every year. Klaus Pittrich, head of the race committee and chief organizer, together with his proven crew, did a great job and the traditional Thursday barbecue welcoming the participants, was perfectly performed. With their long time experience, Secretary Heinz- Peter Nersinger and the Captain Martin Eckel and crew managed to serve 400 sausages without any problem to sailors and their guests. In a mild evening the sailors enjoyed the perfect club- beer garden setting until the late hours. On Friday Sept. 21st, no race could be started and the sailors enjoyed late summer atmosphere at the club with Bavarian jazz music and “Wesswurst breakfast” while waiting for the wind. On Saturday the weather was impacted by the cold front of an approaching small depression and increasing winds. Three races were sailed. During race two, wind gusts to 30 knots, heavy rain and big waves washed over the brave fighting fleet, and the race finished with some boats retireing to the HSC Harbor due to damage. At the end of the day, the sailors were welcomed at the club with warm tea and sandwiches. On the evening of this heavy sailing day the sailors enjoyed a Bavarian dinner with never ending quantities of beer and other beverages. After the dinner the club cocktail bar opened and the sailors enjoyed the evening with some drinks and relaxing music. On Sunday morning, the race committee gave up on more races after two hours of waiting for wind. With three finished races the Oktoberfestregatta was won by Axel Hampe and Chris Conrads (ZuW), followed by Markus Steinlein and the famous Marc Pickel (Sta) with Hubert Merkelbach (UB) with Christian Knoll in third. During the trophy ceremony, Axel Hampe honored the organizers and sailors of this traditional event. Klaus Pittrich, chief race organizer and president of the HSC thanked the sailors for the fair sailing and discipline and invited them to return for the 52nd Oktoberfestregatta, 27 to 29 of September 2013. |
