Reports by Steve Braverman After five races in the six race series, three time North American Champion John MacCausland from New Jersey and Brian Fatih from Southern California have a four point lead in the Marks Star North American Championship. The regatta is being hosted by Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop, Massachusetts, and sailed in Broad Sound near the entrance to Boston Harbor. In Monday's only race, MacCausland and Fatih finished first in a puffy and shifty 5-12 knot southerly. Tuesday's races were in a 5-10 easterly breeze. Jack Rickard and Jeremy Davidson won the first race, and Karl Anderson and Magnus Liljedahl won the second. The regatta leaders finished third and eighth which is their discard. Tricky current has been a factor in all races, especially in the light wind and lumpier seas on Tuesday. Hyde Perce and Chuck Nevel, fresh from winning the 4th District Blue Star earlier this month, are tied for second with Anderson and Liljedahl. Ben Cesare and Doug Brophy, OCS in the second race Tuesday, are in fourth.
The final race is scheduled for Wednesday, in a light easterly. Aug. 22 - Races 1 and 2: Rain and severe thunder squalls gave an ominous start to the regatta as Saturday's practice race was cancelled, and most competitors stayed ashore; However, Sunday was a new day, and the weather was quite pleasant for the first two races of the Marks Star North American Championship. Cottage Park Yacht Club, in Winthrop Massachusetts, is playing host to competitors from seven countries for the Silver Star event this week: USA, Argentina, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, and the Ukraine. This stacked 44-boat fleet contains the likes of Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time Star World Champion (Gold Star), Bill Buchan, Etchells & J/24 World Champion Karl Anderson sailing with Gold Medal Crew Magnus Liljedal, George Szabo, and many other Silver Star champions, and top notched sailors. Sixteen sailors in this event recently campaigned and raced the trials to represent USA in Athens. After a short postponement Sunday, PRO Tom Duggan sent the competitors on two challenging races in a 5-10 knot easterly. Understanding the current and staying in the pressure in a tricky and spotty breeze were the biggest factors in today's races. Ben Cesare from Norwalk, Connecticut and Doug Brophy, from Manchester, Massachusetts sit atop the leaderboard after winning the first race, and staying in the hunt to finish fourth in the second. Cesare is fresh off his recent Star District One Championship (Oyster Bay, NY) and Ned Hay (Rockport, MA) regatta victories. It was a tough day to be consistent in these conditions, but three-time North American Champion (Silver Star) John MacCausland from New Jersey sailing with Brian Fatih from Newport Beach California sit in second after finishing third in both races. Hyde Perce & Chuck Nevel from Chicago won today's second race, and are tied for fifth overall with Buchan and Greg Newhall. Four more races are scheduled in the event with the regatta concluding on Wednesday. |
