Tom Price and Murray Leigh win the Lipton trophy!

2015 Oxford Regatta - Lipton Cup

Saturday of Oxford regatta started off atypical for the first week of August, we had wind and plenty of it. The star raced off the dock towards the Dorchester shore at Castle Haven Pt, downwind in 14-18 kts with a few blasts above that. PRO Richard Lippincott got us started with the wind lightening to about 13-15kts. The day called for ebb current and a right shift as the breeze died by late afternoon. The first race Tom Price and Murray Leigh took off to the middle right with Mark and Billy Holowesko hot on their heels. Bob Lippincott and Mike Zuschnitt rounded out third with the fleet close astern. In race two, John VanderHoff and Adam Dorezal took an early lead with Schuyler Benson and Andrew Parish and Price/Murray close astern. During the second beat, the breeze felt better in the middle, but veered right and VanderHoff and Price split right to capitalize. Race three showed a 30 degree right shift in the last 20 seconds before the start, forcing the whole fleet to start on port. Holowesko led the way, only to have VanderHoff snatch the win on the last downwind leg. PRO Lippincott had planned for four races Saturday, but as race 3 wrapped up, the wind gods closed us down. The air got light and shifty, calling it a day. The standings after Saturday held VanderHoff and Holowesko tied for first and Price a point back in third. Sunday’s forecast was spot on, nothing usable until 1 pm. We towed out and waited for something to materialize. PRO Lippincott paid homage and the wind Gods gave us race 4. In the words of Tom Price, “there are no excuses for just plain luck!” But Tom’s that good, because when the breeze fills in the Choptank, it generally comes in from the right, no matter the initial direction. Price/Murray and Barbara Vosbury and Polly Cox banged the right corner and held the fleet to the finish. With Price winning the last race, the scores were upset and Tom Price and Murray Leigh are our 2015 Sir Lipton Cup Champion. It was great to see some old and new faces on the course, Jim Allsopp crewing for his son Cole, Polly Cox sailing with Barbara Vosbury ,Mary Katherine McKelvy sailing with Alan Campbell and Patrick Firth sailing with RJ Cooper. Many thanks to Tred Avon Yacht Club for hosting the racing and Chip and Sally Akridge and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club for hosting the fabulous awards ceremony at Harleigh.
