| Seven teams competed for the 66th Star Class
Fall Windup at Tred Avon YC on October 1 and
2, 2016. Saturday brought breezy conditions
out of the North East and allowed for three
ideal races to be sailed on the Choptank
River with winds in the 10-18 knot range.
The teams of Oldak / Noel and Zwingleburg /
Morey were generally fast in the breeze and
between the two teams they won all three
races for the day. Cooper / Joyce ended the
day in a close third followed by Leigh /
Taylor in fourth. Saturday night the fleet
was treated to the traditional surf and turf
dinner of beef tenderloin and crab imperial
that is a mainstay at the Fall Windup. A
great day by all accounts! Sunday was extremely light air out of the North West as the front had moved out of the area. Richard Lippincott and his team took advantage of the wind that we did have on Sunday and we managed to get in two more races on Sunday. Cooper / Joyce won the first race on Sunday which set up a showdown in the fifth race between Oldak, Zwingleburg and Cooper to resolve the podium finishes in the final race. The race saw the most wind of the day and the wind that we did have was consistent which was nice. The fleet was extremely tight through the first leg and then Lippincott / Rajacich and Elliot Oldak / Noel gybed for the right side while the balance of the fleet stayed left going down wind. This proved to be advantageous for Lippincott and Oldak and they went on to finish one, two in the final race. Zwingleburg / Morey held on for third place in the race followed by Leigh / Taylor then Cooper / Joyce and Cox / Burton. After all of the dust settled Elliott Oldak and Andy Noel won the TAYC Fall Windup for 2016 with Shane Zwingleburg and Ed Morey in second and R. J. Cooper and Matt Joyce in third. The novice trophy went to Jeff Cox as did the "oldest boat" award. Shane Zwingleburg won the award for the team furthest traveled as he made the unbelievable trek from Dundalk. |
