| 2005 12th District Championships The weekend of June 24-26 saw 19 boats from the 12th District vie for the Blue Star on Lake of Two Mountains (Lac des Deux Montagnes) near Montreal, Quebec. Club Nautique Deux Montagnes did an excellent job of organizing the event with a barbecue on Friday evening and a banquet on Saturday. The wind was turned on for the start of the event with winds between 10 and 20 knots for the races on Friday. Fortunately no one lost a mast although there were a few minor breakdowns; in particular André Gagnon broke a lower before the start of race 1 and then an intermediate in race 3! By the end of the first day the leaders had made their mark: Brian Cramer and Steve Cutting had a 1, 2; Brad Anderson and Doug Folsetter had 1, 3 and Rick Dhein had 3, 4. Saturday was virtually perfect Star weather with winds in the 9 to 15 knot range. The three leaders stayed up there but Brad and Doug moved up to first place with a 1, 2; Brian and Steve dropped to second with a 1 and a 5 and Rick and Clark held on to third with a score of 2 and 4. The final day of racing, with one race left to decide the championships promised to be exciting! Doug & Brad and Brian & Steve were tied on points after the drop that would come into play after the fifth race. Things looked good on the way out to the racecourse with winds of about 5 knots from the East. The weather forecast was for about 10 knots from the East to Northeast but that was not how it was going to be! After the start the wind gradually died to nothing and after the 3.5 hour time limit expired the PRO abandoned the race and the results at the end of Saturday became the final results. Brian claims he was only minutes from the finish when the time limit expired but there is some debate as to how many minutes. The Green Star was won by André Marcotte and Alain Vranderick. First prize for the Master’s division went to Brian Cramer and Steve Cutting, while Steve Haarstick and Kirk Reynolds won the Grand Master’s division. The PRO David Sprague from Toronto did an excellent job and we never needed to call on the international class protest committee led by David Pelling who was on standby all weekend. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this regatta a success, especially Alain Vranderick, the regatta chair, his wife Dominique Brault, who ended up doing all the coordination as well as working on the RC boat, Jamie André de la Porte who was responsible for logistics, Dominique Trépanier who arranged the trophies and steaks for the barbecue and Will Hendershot who took care of the on-the-water organization. |
