Reports on racing by Paul Cayard. Final results for six races are below.
Report by Danny Kileen: The boats were cleared to head out of the harbor at 1:15 as the RC went in search of a steady southerly. Race number 1 had a clean start at 2:30 pm after an hour and a half postponement. The wind at the start was 8 knots from 195 degrees. The 18 boats headed off on Course 4 – Windward Leeward twice around. it was 12 minutes from the start till the first boat reached the weather mark at 2:30pm. Only one race was sailed. Day Two: Another squall line pushed through the area overnight clearing out the rain and leaving the breeze out of the north at 14 – 16 knots. But the north breeze started to fade away as the day warmed up. The first race of the day started on time at 1:00pm CDT with the wind at 045 degrees and 8 – 10 knots. The fading breeze was a bit shifty and the fleet made their way twice around the windward leeward course in an hour. Day three: With the wind blowing 30 knots and the “bad squall line” still on its way the decision to call off racing for the day was made. There will be a 10am start on Friday with the possibility of three races. Everyone is anxious to get the four races in to qualify the event as a regatta and get a discard race. A tour of Trinity Yachts is set for the afternoon and then Pizza at Fregenes tonight, Austin & Sally’s place. Race four: Race started at 10am with 8 knots of breeze from 320. The NW breeze began to lighten a bit as the race progressed. 17 boats completed the twice around windward leeward course. The race committee is setting up to start race number 5. The 2009 Star Western Hemisphere Championships are completed. What a difference a day makes. Yesterday’s washout from the storms turned in to a bright sunny day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The nice Northerly breeze was shifting around all to the west all day (when it gets to the south it’s usually a great day) and it had some light spots and some puffs scattered in there. The fleet was able to get in three races today to add to the three races already completed. After getting to discard a race Cayard/Sperry win the tie breaker over MacCausland/Trinter. Winning the Mastes' Division was Alberto Zanetti/Gustavo Warburg, followed by Larry Whipple/Mike Wolfs and Jock Kohlhas/Brad Balmert. |
