2010 Ned Hay Regatta

Sailed at Sandy Bay Yacht Club, Massachusetts, USA.

Once again the Cape Ann Fleet hosted the Ned Hay Memorial Regatta on August 14 - 15th. Due to an unfortunate scheduling error the turnout was historically low with only Cape Ann fleet members on hand for the sailing. That proved to be the only negative on this weekend the weather was perfect with warm dry days and steady Southerly breezes from 6 to 13 knots. This combined with stellar race management to provide for 8 races on the weekend. Saturday started with light but steady winds from the Southeast that allowed for 2 races to be sailed in Sandy Bay. Following the morning session with a nice afternoon sailing in the more open waters of Thachers Bay in a steady Southerly completing 3 more races and everyone back at the dock by 5 pm. A better day could not have been asked for.

Josh Phypers and Fritz Koopman took race one and followed that with a 2 in the second race and was steady in the afternoon as well. Ken Woods and Bill Paton won race 2 and 3 and held the day one lead by a point over Josh as everyone settled in for a great evening of dinner and drinks at SBYC.

Three races were planned for Sunday, once again with a steady Southerly and a little more pressure. The RC moved swiftly and all races were completed. Tom Safford sailing with his dad John as crew following a couple of 2's on day one, started Sunday with a win. The 14 year old looks to have a bright future in the Star with a 3rd in race 7 before a minor breakdown ended their day early. Josh Phypers and Fritz Koopman took control of the regatta with a solid 2, 1, 2 to win the 2010 Ned Hay Memorial Regatta.

As has been the custom Martha Safford provided numerous paintings to be awarded as prizes to celebrate the talented artists of Rockport and Cape Ann. This year proved to be a special treat as paintings were awarded for places 1 through 4. This capped a great weekend of sailing, socializing, and art that has come to define the Ned Hay. Congratulations Josh and Fritze hope to see all of you next year.
