2012 1st District Championship / Ned Hay

This year the Ned Hay Trophy was co-hosted with the 1st District Championship at Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport, MA on Saturday and Sunday August 10-12. The breezes came from the southern side of the compass between 5-12 knots. The race committee did a spectacular job working with the local conditions to get 5 great races in over the 3 days. Two days we sailed in Sandy Bay and one day in the ocean off of Cape Ann.

By co-hosting the events each crew was competing for both the historic district trophies as well as spectacular paintings awarded as the Ned Hay trophies, each piece hand-selected by Martha Safford. Martha has been working for decades with local artists to find pieces that are both significant works of art and meaningful to the Star class. This year Martha was honored by Fleet Captain Ted Engel and the entire 1st District for her efforts over the years to make the Ned Hay such an amazing event.

Jud Smith and David Timberlake sailed an impressive event, stringing together three straight bullets in the middle of the series to win the District 1 Championship, MacDonald Brothers Masters Trophy, and the Ned Hay Trophy. The Green Star was awarded to an impressive Star rookie Chris Stocke and his crew (a long time Star family member, but young) Tom Safford.

Special acknowledgements to Sandy Bay Yacht Club, the Race Committee, the Engel Family for hosting a spectacular dinner for all the competitors Saturday night, Martha Safford and to Luis Hornos for his past years of service as District 1 Secretary.
