Report by Harrison Gill, PRO: Cedar Point hosted the annual Open Regatta for the Bedford Pitcher on Sept. 8-9, a weekend of great Star racing despite conditions ranging from four-foot waves and 25-knot winds on Saturday to long spells with no wind on Sunday. CPYC's Jock Kohlhas and Ronald Schulz took the #1 spot for the five-race series, followed by John Edenbach and Will Christianson. Keith Donald and Kevin Elterman, of Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, took third. Cedar Point's Richie Gordon, by far the youngest sailor of the event, and his father, Rich Gordon, took fourth. Participation was down somewhat as a result of the NAs in Hamilton, Ontario, but the nine teams that made it enjoyed great sailing and interesting conditions. With a strong frontal system blowing through on Saturday, sailors headed out in a stiff southerly that ranged from 18 to 25 knots. Will Swigart and Mark Sokolich won Race 1, followed by Edenbach and Christianson. Race 2 saw Kohlhas finish first followed by Keith Donald in second and Edenbach in third. By the end of the second race with the stiff breeze blowing directly out of the south, the choppy seas gave way to steep waves and even stronger gusts. The competitors decided to spare their rigs and see what Sunday held. Forecasts called for a cool, clear day with gentle winds out of the north. At harbor start it looked as if the forecast would hold, but with forty seconds left in the first sequence the breeze completely died, forcing a postponement that would last for nearly two hours. Just as it began to look as if three Sunday races would be impossible, a sea breeze filled in, steady at 6 to 9 knots out of the south southeast. Edenbach won Race 3 with Kohlhas second, leaving them tied for the series. Race 4 again saw the Edenbach and Kohlhas vying for the lead at the top mark, but on the second beat, veteran Star sailor, Thorny Cook, snuck past them both to take the gun. Jock came from behind in Race 5 to capture the Pitcher, one point ahead of Edenbach. Keith Donald finished third for the series with standout Cedar Point junior sailor Richie Gordon in fourth. Richie was also one of only four skippers who managed to finish all five races. Special thanks go out to his crew and father, Rich, who was event chair for another successful Open Regatta for the Bedford Pitcher. |
