Final results for five races at Cedar
Point Yacht Club, Westport, Connecticut. It has
been 25 years since Bill Watson last won
the first district championship.
Report by Rich Gordon: Clear sky and good winds greeted us Saturday and the first race started on time with winds of 8 to 14 knots. Ken Woods and Kevin Elterman jumped out to an early lead but were overtaken by John Edenbach and William Christenson on the last leg. The second race was much the same but this time, Ken Woods came from the middle of the fleet on the second windward leg to win by staying right. Winds started to die for the third race going down almost to zero before coming back in from the southwest. Dave Cutler and Dave Lutian grabbed an early lead but were passed by Bill Watson and Roger Sharp who held it for the last three legs. At the end of the day John Edenbach, Ken Woods and Bill Watson were all within two points of each other. Sunday looked like no wind but then a southwest sea breeze came in and the first race started at 10:30 with about 3 to 12 knots. Bill Watson got the early lead and was able to keep it to the end with Ben Sternberg and Valentin Veytsman coming out of the pack for second. The fifth race was a more steady 10 knots. Bill Watson was first at the first mark with John Edenback right behind. John moved into the lead downwind and Bill dropped to fifth. On the last leg it looked like John had the Blue Star but about 100 yards from the finish Bill was able to pass Peter Cusick and Drew Polmisnki to finish second and win his second Blue Star. Twenty-five years ago Bill and Roger won their first Blue Star at Milford. This was one great event. The facility and equipment at Cedar Point are probably the best in the Northeast for Star racing. Historically Cedar Point has one of the oldest fleets in the country dating back to 1922. The race committee work (Nelson Stephenson) was perfect with the next race starting sequence within five minutes of the last boat finishing. If you are the last boat you better eat your lunch on the last leg. Saturday night Thorny and Pam Cook hosted a Rum Party, which was followed by a great steak and chicken cookout. Rich Gordon, besides sailing, coordinated the diner and found a great cook in Ken Woods. A great event! |
