Report by Jeffrey Imai: Congratulations to Mark Passmore and Ivan Bunner for winning the 2008 12th District Championship. Tom White and Arthur Anosov won the Green Star event. Brian Cramer won the Masters. Richard Burgess won the Grand Masters. Josh Asermily won Leading Youth. Amanda Karahanas won Leading Lady. WLOC won the top Blue Fleet and Seneca Lake won the top Green Fleet. It was a great weekend of sailing. Friday got off to a slow start. After the skippers' meeting and under a postpone flag, John Chiarella held the 12th District annual meeting. We waited until 2:45 pm before the race committee boat left the dock to set the course. In light winds from the south east, Mark Passmore scored the first bullet of the regatta. After a wonderful BBQ back at National a small group headed off for an evening of spherical arts (billiards). Saturday morning started off with no winds, rain and foggy conditions. After a brief postponement, the fleet went out to the race course. Although there was a decent breeze from the south east, at times it was difficult to see the leeward gate in front of the race committee boat. A further postponement lasted for about an hour with the first casualty of the regatta, a broken mast. After the disabled boat was removed, the postponement flag came down and racing was on. After 2 general recalls, race 2 started clean under a black flag. The second casualty of the day was a collision resulting in one boat withdrawing as it was taking on water. Passmore was able to find the marks in the fog and finished first. The second race of the day had a clean start. The winds were building slightly and the fog was clearing. This time Cramer finished first followed closely by Passmore. The third race saw the fog lift but dark storm clouds going north of the course. After another clean start, Passmore had a fast start, pretty much leading the entire race to finish first. The host club, The National Yacht Club, put on a great banquet dinner, followed by the presentation of the daily keepers. After two days, Passmore had clinched first place in the regatta and did not need to sail Sunday. Sunday morning saw some rain and light winds. The winds were from the south west. A slight wind shift forced a postponement to change the course and which allowed the last two boats to arrive to the course. As the race started the skies cleared up making it easier to spot the windward mark. Terry Line sailed high to the left and rounded the windward mark first and continued to finish first. The second downwind leg saw an exciting finish with the 5th through to the 15th boats finishing within a couple of boat lengths of each other. |
