| Report by David Cook: Thirty three boats from eleven fleets and three countries entered this years Sunapee Open. The brisk northwest winds of 12 to 20 knots provided a great direction for Course #3. John MacCausland took the lead and held off Ron Sandstrom to win the first race. Andy Ivey of the host fleet worked his way up to third place on the final beat and Bill Watson finished fourth in his first return to the Lake Sunapee waters in over two decades. The winds lightened up a little and became shiftier for the second race. Ron Sandstrom took the lead and never looked back. There was a good battle for the next several places with positions changing on each shift. Young Clark Dhein won the battle for second place and even younger Tomas Hornos placed third. Barbara Beigel-Vosbury held off John MacCausland to finish fourth. The Renowned Steak Dinner was enjoyed at the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club on Saturday evening and we watched the clear calm waters on Sunday morning until it became apparent that the wind was not happening for race number three. Ron Sandstrom and Steve Braverman win the regatta, John MacCausland with Rodrigo Meirelis take second, and Clark Dhein with Rick Burgess crewing were third. Joe Goodnough received the Exalted Grand Master honor, Bill Watson the Grand Master, and Ron Sandstrom the Masters trophy. Clark Dhein, racing his first star regatta, is the leading novice and Barbara Beigel-Vosbury is the first recipient of The Sue Williamson Trophy as Leading Lady. The trophy is in memory of long time Sunapee Star sailor Sue Williamson who we lost in June. |
