Regatta report by RGV Sports, Chile
The Vina del Mar sailors Rodrigo Zuazola and Robert Riegel were crowned the unbeaten winners at the South American Championship of the Star Class, which took place at the Yacht Club de Chile in the Garden City. This was the first time this championship has been sailed in Chilean waters.
Due to the sunny day, the wind abandoned the fleet on the last day of racing. The race officer, Pan American medalist in the Lightning CristiՍn Herman, delayed the first race on shore, and then waited until the end of the regulatory deadline. Unfortunately, the wind did not appear in the bay, which ended the championship, after completing five races.
So, even with the lack of wind on Tuesday, winners Riegel and Zuazola ended up in the water, but thrown in by their rivals as a celebration for having won the regional championship with five consecutive wins. Finishing second were the Argentines Daniel della Torre and JuliՍn Barroso, with nine points. In third were the Tras Andeans Gerardo della Torre and Guillermo Latour with thirteen points, the same score as the Americans Claude Bonnani and Richard Burgess.
