Congratulations to Tomas Hornos and Josh Revkin for a second consecutive win at the 2015 First District Championships on June 26 – 28 at Milford Yacht Club. A total of 17 boats participated in this year’s event which featured uncharacteristically high winds and seas, and a great test of gear and crew endurance. After the first day, the first four boats were 2 points apart with 7, 8, 8, and 9 points apiece. Tomas and Josh turned it on and had bullets the rest of the way sealing the deal.
Friday had decent to light breeze (3 races). Saturday (2 races) and Sunday (1 race) had 12-15 with higher gusts, and fantastic waves. The surfing was phenomenal!!! Upwind boat speed was key to negotiating the waves. There were some shifts, but you had to keep the boat going. Downwind was a speed, surfing and control contest!
BH had a decent showing with 1st, 5th and 7th places. However, CLIS not only had strength with 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but had a strong showing with 6 boats participating (congratulations). Will Swigart traveled from Hong Kong for the event, and Bill Watson from Downeast Maine, earning longest- commute honors. Will’s efforts were repayed with a Second Place and Grand Master’s Trophy. Peter went home with a Third Place and Master’s Trophy, but minus one mast that did not survive a gust on the penultimate downwind leg. Dave Burger and Ed Kuryluk took host fleet honors for Mid CT.
Congrats to Luke Buxton and Jason Peters with 3 great races and a solid series on winning the Green Star. We need to get more sailors like Luke and Jay back into the class.
The Milford team put on a spectacular event. Alan Pritchard and RC banged off 6 races in challenging conditions. We enjoyed a great Saturday night social at Lou Roberts’ house overlooking the harbor and the nasty weather which blew through overnight. Great company, food and drink. After the feast, Fritz Koopman ran a productive district meeting in the billiard room. Lots of good ideas, with a few action items…. we have a goal of 20 boats at next year’s districts (location TBD) with a focus on attracting junior sailors.
See you next year.
