2015 marked the 46th year of the Howard “Pappy” Lippincott memorial regatta. In District 2 the Lippincott name provokes a lot of emotion, builders of wooden Stars (Lightnings and Comets too), being the first Star builder to transition to a competitive fiberglass Star, collecting more trophies than probably any other family, and just being all around fun people. Back ‘in the day’ Pappy and the Zerend were always on hand for a bunk and a beer! Saturday was a perfect day to be sailing Stars. 9-12 knots out of the South produced a 1-1.5 foot sea which made for some great downwind work (as long as you kept your pole out of the water!). Mike Hecky and Arnis Baltins (2-1-2) had a one point lead at the end of the day over Bert Collins and Jake Doyle (3-2-1).

The weather prediction for Sunday was iffy at best. Rain in the morning, a low cloud cover and 85 degree temperature were threatening to ruin our perfect weekend.

Finally the breeze settled in at 175 degrees and about 4 knots. The Race Committee did an excellent job getting one flawless race in.

Thank you to Mike Hecky for driving down to sail with us. We hope more will come next year to celebrate the Lippincott legacy of the Star Class. We’ll be changing some things up, so stay tuned. Thank you also to Annapolis YC and their RC folks who showed the ultimate in patience with the conditions of the weekend. We are lucky to have such good race management so close by.
