Report by Jason Antill:

The Star boats came together again at the Royal Prince Alfred YC for the Mid Winter International One Design Regatta 12-13 July 2015. Along with the modern classes, Melges, Etchells, 11m and Elliots the bay was alive with nearly 50 boats including a good fleet of Dragons and 5.5m classes making it a true spectacle on the stunning Pittwater.

Leading up to the weekend the weather system was not looking good for our developing Star Class fleet with winds predicted over 20 knots. However I would like to thank my grandfather Harry Antill, a pioneering Star boat sailor in the 50’s & 60’s on Pittwater who passed away aged 102 in the week leading up to the regatta, for arranging a perfect weather window for the fleet.

With light to moderate north west winds Pittwater showed exactly why it is one of the best training grounds for sailors. The top three boats were inseparable with Visser/Mayjor clearly showing a dominance in the lighter pressure and their knowledge of Pittwater paying off - a result of their many hours of Finn training. Except for the change in course on the second last race of the day when they went to the wrong mark - dropping them from the lead to last.

Day 2 looked ominous with a southerly front due in with over 25 knots forecast. However the RPAYC race committee led by David West had made a good decision getting an extra race in on Saturday and decided to start early Sunday allowing for two great races in 15 knots. With everyone safely back in the club before the front arrived.

The extra breeze saw McMillan/Gavenlock dominate with two well deserved bullets. Allowing them to hold their title from last year. Mark Lovelady, a first timer to the class but experienced Etchells man from Perth, came a very close second. He promises to return for other regatta weekends.
