A thirtieth edition of the Coppa Tito Nordio that will be remembererd, for the quality and the number of entries: 38 boats in the water, from 11 countries. The italians, 18, raced also for the Italian Championship. The strong croatians Misura-Barac won the Cup: apart an OCS(premature start) in the first race, they did very few mistakes, never finishing below the seventh position. Then follows the other croatian team, Lovrovic junior and senior, and in third place there is Guglielmo ‘Gughi’ Danelon with Mattia Gazzetta, from Trieste, that won the Italian Championship in their ‘home’ waters. Six fought races, sailed in difficult weather conditions, often cloudy sky and variable medium-light wind.
Friday 24th April, Day 1, a wind of about 10 knots from NW shifts on the right during the first race giving advantage to whom chose the right of the course during the beating. At the end the wind decreases to almonst nothing, making the finish very uncertain. Santoni- Lambertenghi win, followed by Leardini-Mazzarol from Lake Garda, and third Danelon-Gazzetta. At the end of the race the wind increases again, from SW this time, around 8 knots. The second race starts, and during the race the wind dies again: the race committee readily readuces the course up to the second beat, where several positions reshuffle due to a right shift and to the decrease of wind strength. The win is for the ukranian Gureyev-Kushnir, followed by Santoni- Lambertenghi and Lovrovic-Lovrovic. After the race, in the lounge of the Yacht Club Adriaco, a ‘pasta party and free beer’ takes place.
Saturday 25 April the fleet is towed to the most offshore field, at the border of Italy and Slovenia. The third race starts with a NW wind of 5-6 knots, slightly dropping during the race. Misura-Barac win, second are Lovrovic-Lovrovic, third the estonian-italian team Volmer-E.M.Semi. During the 4th race the wind becomes a little stronger, but again the tactics remains difficult, because of the variability in strentgh and direction. Misura-Barac win the second race in a row, followed by the Dutch De Boer-Houvening, and third the british Razmilovic-Hammerseley. First italian is the grand master from Trieste Diego Paoletti, sixth. In the fifth race, third of the day, there is again a wind shift and change of intensity, which drops during the second beating. The race committee thus reduces the course up to the second windward leg, which reveals difficult also because of some swell. Also in this final leg there are several changes in the ranking. At the finish line the austrian team Sturm-Nehammer is first, second Misura-Barac, third the italian father and son De Bernardi from d’Orta lake.
In the evening the Yacht Club offered a fish dinner. In this occasion each participant received a silver cup in memory of the 30th anniversary of the Coppa Tito Nordio.
Sunday 26th, after having waited the wind at the dock, the last scheduled race begun. Also in this one the light wind dominates, and as for other two the course is reduced at the end of the second windward leg. The italian Danelon-Gazzetta, that started with same points as Santoni-Lambertenghi, win and therefore takes the overall victory in the Italian Championship. Second and third Lovrovic-Lovrovic and Misura-Barac, which win the Coppa Tito Nordio with great margin.
During the prizegiving Dodo Gorla, unforgotten Star world champion and two times bronze at Olympics, handed to Mattia Gazzetta the Challenge Trophy ‘Alfio Peraboni’, which he instituted in memory of his crew, and is addressed to the best italian crew. Congratulations!
