A long wait for the 25 teams attending the Southern Hemisphere in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Day Two. The wind came in later than expected from East/South-East and the first warning signal was only blown with about 10 knots at 14.30 local time.

The third race, and first of the day, was very disputed between the Longarela and the Altolaguirre brothers. Only in the very last downwind leg the Rosarinos (nickname for Leandro and Lucas Altolaguirre) got the third bullet in a row in this 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere. Hector and Hugo Longarela finished second and in third place came the former Olympic Laser sailor Julio Alsogaray with Lucas Carisimi.

For the second race of the day the wind increased to 12/15 knots and saw a nice battle between Fabian Mac Gowan with Nicolas Rosas, Alberto Zanetti with Gustavo Warburg and, again, Leandro and Lucas Altolaguirre. Everything was decided in the last leg in which the Rosarinos were the fastest once again, and have a scorecard of all bullets so far. Mac Gowan/Rosas closed in second and Alsogaray/Carisimi came in to finish third.

The brothers from the city of Rosario, the Altolaguirre, are sitting in the most desirable spot of the ranking and it looks like no one will be able to snatch the Silver Star off them easily, even though there are still four races to be sailed between tomorrow and Sunday, December 12th.

Day Three of the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is in the books with another two fair races on the Rio de Plata for the 25 teams attending the event.

The first race of the day, and fifth overall, was postponed for an hour and started at 14:00 with an easterly breeze of about 8 knots. A good shift from the right in the first downwind leg pushed the Longarela brothers and Memo Calegari with Sancho Castro in first and second place. Those positions were maintained throughout the race but in the end Hector and Hugo Longarela were overtook and the great Memo Calegari won the race, Poro Monez Ruiz with his nephew Lucas Monez Ruiz finished seconds and in third place it was Fernando Queirel and Julian Gazari junior.

The second race of the day started with 10/12 knots from 95/100 degrees. The fleet was split on the racecourse, half went right, and half chose the left, meeting back at the first topmark. The downwind was very disputed with many changes in positions. At last Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro and the Altolaguirre brothers emerged as leaders in the last downwind, winning the fifth race out of six. Peisajovich/Ciro misjudged the layline and were passes by the Altolaguirre duo. In third place came Daniel Della Torre with his crew Julian Gazzari.

Six of the eight races scheduled have been sailed at Club Nautico Olivos. The plan is to fulfill the schedule with two more races tomorrow.
The party is on tonight ashore, with a camaraderie dinner for all the teams, having a tribute to the former Star Sailors in Argentina.

The Altolaguirre brothers, Leandro and Lucas are the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Champions! They earned their first Silver Star after an amazing scorecard of five bullets out of eight races and a huge 24-point margin over the second team, Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro, and 25 over the third, Fabian Mac Gowan with Nicolas Rosas.

The Championship, organized in Buenos Aires by Club Nautico Olivos and the ISCYRA, ended today with two more races, reaching the scheduled total of eight. The first race of the day was sailed with an offshore breeze of 12/15 knots at the start that increased up to 18/20 towards the end. There was a strong threat of ‘Pampero’ on the racecourse – a local wind that generally comes with a storm – but luckily it wasn’t the case.
The race was close between Diego Peisajovich with Javier Ciro and Alberto Zanetti with Gustavo Warburg and the Altolaguirre Brothers. They rounded the first windward mark in this exact order. Over the last three legs their positions changed and only in the last downwind Zanetti/Warburg extended enough to win the race, while the Altolaguirres finished in second place and were able to celebrate the win of their first Silver Star (the winners of a Continental Star Championship win a Silver Star they apply on the mainsail).

Leandro Altolaguirre: “I am very happy for today, there was very shifty wind from shore, but we managed to finish second in the first race of the day to mathematically win the championship, so we decided to spare the boat another race and we headed back in the harbor”.
Lucas Altolaguirre: “I am super happy to have won this, and honestly it took a long time and lots of work to get here. We were quite consistent this week and it allowed us to skip the last race and enjoy our very first Silver Star”.

The second and last race was sailed with a little less wind, about 10/12 knots, that was much shiftier than on the previous one.
Again, Peisajovich/Ciro were first at the top mark with Fabian Mac Gowan and Nicolas Rosas following in second and Julio Alsogaray and Lucas Carisimi rounding third. The race had some strong shifts in wind direction that affected the positions of the fleet. Mac Gowan/Rosas were able to win the last race, Hernán Monez Ruiz with Juan Ignacio Morand were second and Mariano Cambon with Guillermo Aporszegi third.

The successful week of sailing in Argentina ended with the traditional prizegiving. A Silver Star was awarded and the organizers of Club Nautico Olivos hope to see you all on the Rio de la Plata, the Silver River.

A beautiful day in Buenos Aires welcomed the 25 teams gathered on Rio de la Plata from the main South American countries to attend the 2021 Star Southern Hemisphere Championship. The Silver Star event started today and will end on Sunday December 12th, organized by Club Nautico Olivos, Star District 18th and the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association.

Two races were sailed on Day One, with the classic local breeze blowing from South-East over Rio de la Plata. The wind stayed between 10/12 knots for the first race while it got up to 15 and more for the second wilder run.

The fight for the first bullet was mainly between Ricky Fabini / Fede Calegari (URU/ARG) and the Altolaguirre brothers, Leandro and Lucas (ARG). The Argentinians got the best and were followed by Fabini/Calegari and Juan Pablo Percossi with Felipe Caivano (ARG).

The Altolaguirre brothers won also the second windier race, followed by Alberto Zanetti with Gustavo Warburg (ARG), and Fabian Mac Gowan and Nicolas Rosas (ARG).

Leandro and Lucas are leading the provisional ranking at the end of Day One, with Percossi/Caivano second and Fabini/Calegari third. A similar forecast is expected for tomorrow and the rest of the week.
