67th Tulip Tune Up Recap - Gull Lake, Michigan, May 22-23, 2021
With the pandemic rules loosening and many folks vaccinated, the District 4’s 67th Gull Lake Tulip Time Tune-Up held this past weekend May 22-23 on Gull Lake, located in Richmond Michigan. As with all past Tulip Tune-Up regattas, the Gull Lake Fleet never fails in hosting this world class event.
25 teams representing 4 NA Districts and 7 fleets were present and all enjoyed beautiful Western Michigan. Many teams travelled early in the week to take advantage of the Gull Lake Fleets Wednesday Club racing along with a few rounds of golf at Gull Lake Country Club.
Boats ready for the weekend event were able to get out on the lake Friday afternoon to get a feel for the shifting breezes in preparation for the challenges usually experienced with inland lake sailing. Five races were sailed, 3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday with the overall win going to the 2013 World Champion team of John Macausland and Phil Trinter. Congratulations to the top 5 awarded the Tulip Tune-Up Traditional wood shoes.
The GL fleet sets the benchmark for events here in the 4th District. Fleet members provide housing to the visitors, which makes this truly a “STAR FAMILY” event. Saturday evenings dinner, featuring the Gull Lake Seafood Chowder, Prime Rib and Salmon keeps us all coming back year after year. The highlight to the evening’s presentation was the award of the Harry Nye Trophy to Mr. Don Parfet who has been a catalyst for continuing the growth and promotion of the Star class. It is an honor to have Don as a leading member of the 4th District. Thank you to Don.
