Three Days of Racing, Challenging Conditions, and Great Camaraderie on the Río de la Plata
From October 10 to 12, the 2026 Distrito 18 Championship took place at Club Náutico Olivos, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Organized by Club Náutico Olivos and Star Class Argentina, with the valuable support of its sponsors, the event brought together 16 crews, including Under 30 sailors and mixed teams, for three days of competitive racing.
The championship offered a wide variety of sailing conditions, from light and shifting breezes to strong southeasterly winds, challenging the fleet’s tactical skills, boat handling, and teamwork.
Saturday, October 10 | A Challenging Start
The championship got underway in light and highly variable winds, making racing particularly demanding. The first race had to be abandoned due to unstable conditions, but as the breeze gradually settled, the race committee managed to complete one race.
Back ashore, sailors and friends gathered for a traditional Argentine barbecue featuring excellent local beef, enjoying a wonderful evening of friendship and camaraderie.
Sunday, October 11 | Close Racing and Tactical Challenges
Sunday delivered more consistent conditions, with winds ranging from 6 to 10 knots, allowing the race committee to complete three races.
The relatively light breeze placed a premium on tactical decisions, boat speed, and consistency, producing close competition throughout the fleet.
Monday, October 12 | A Spectacular Finale
The final day brought a dramatic change in conditions, with fresh southeasterly winds and gusts exceeding 20 knots.
The fleet completed the final two races of the championship in exhilarating conditions, with powerful gusts, exciting downwind legs, and spectacular high-speed planing across the waters of the Río de la Plata.
It was a thrilling conclusion to three days of racing, showcasing the performance of the Star boat and the skills of its sailors.
Prize-Giving and Star Class Spirit
Following the final races, competitors, families, and friends gathered for the prize-giving ceremony to recognize the championship’s top-performing crews.
The event concluded in an atmosphere of friendship, sportsmanship, and camaraderie, once again highlighting the strong bonds that make the Star Class such a special sailing community.
