Southern Yacht Club burns down
Over the past several days, we have all seen the devastation that has occurred in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of the US. Starting with the weather channel documenting the storm, to the detailed accounts of the aftermath from CNN and other media, we have watched in horror as the true extent of the storm and subsequent flooding became apparent.

On behalf of Star Sailors everywhere, I would like to extend sympathies, concerns, and prayers to all those in the region.

I have heard news from several Star people, including John Dane and family, Austin and Sally Sperry, and Andy Lovell and family. All are safe and in good health; but each has suffered significant loss of personal property. I am sure there are many other sailors, Star Class and others, who are similarly affected. Most of the Yacht Clubs in the area have been destroyed or severely damaged.

Tammy Hall of the Mobile register has noted a website that has a forum to learn about sailors and Yacht Clubs in the area. http://myfwyc.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=10.

I have personally had the good fortune to have visited the area often and sailed several times at Southern and Pass Christian Yacht Clubs. I have experienced firsthand the natural beauty and rich culture of the region and wonderful hospitality of the people.

It is very difficult to find words to express the sorrow and concern that we all feel for the impact of the storm on the land and the inhabitants. So many people out of their homes, in many cases with no homes to return to; and the chaos that has resulted from the lack of basic life necessities. It appears that the situation is stabilizing, and that hopefully plans for the rebuilding can begin soon. I look forward to returning to the area again in the not too distant future.

I know I speak for Star sailors everywhere when I say that we all stand ready to help in any way we can to assist our friends in this time of great need.
