The following results are from the Star Logs. Starting with 1977 frequently only yacht numbers were given. The last time both yacht numbers and yacht names were given was 1989. In later years sometimes, fleet designations were omitted. In these cases some of the more obvious fleet designations were supplied. Also from time to time only last names were supplied. First names, where known, were added.

Regatta Report
by Jane Pegel

On Saturday, August 21, the 1982 World Championship opened at Medemblik, Holland on the west shor of the Ijsselmeer. Eighty one Stars from fifteen nations were in place. Commodore Willem Dwars welcomed the sailors and the defending champions Alexander Hagen and Vincent Hoesch hosted the ISCYRA flag.

On the previous day the Star class annual meeting had ratified the International Race Committee, headed by Willem Dwars as chairman and Robert Verdonk, principal race officer.

Seventy Star skippers decided to test their speed and equipment in the tune up race in a breeze of about force 4. Gastas Brun took an early lead followed by Alex Hagen, but Uew von Below was the first of the 23 finishers. Fernando de Abreu was second, and Bill Buchan third.

The forecast for the first race was partly cloudy with wind 8-15 knots, and showers later in the day After one general recall the fleet was off the line. Many boats remained on starboard tack for several minutes in an all even drag race, with those who could not maintain the pace breaking away onto port. Stefano Roberti reached the windward mark first. Hagen moved into a healthty lead at the leeward mark which he maintained upwind and hung on to win. Jens Christensen and Buchan came on fast for a close second and third.

At race time for the second race it was blowing 15 and increasing. The middle of the line bulged over early to cause a general recall, the next start got away clear in the increasing wind. Antonio Gorostegui and Jose Luis Doreste who just won the European Championship came from left of center to lead through to the finish. Hollander Kees Douze got second and Jochen Schwarz finished third.

As the fleet left the harbor for race three, the sky was blue with dark clouds approaching. The starting sequence went through five general recalls before the fleet got away on the sixth try. A “sudden death” enforcement on this final start took its toll of 10 boats, including Buchan and von Below. Fritz Geis worked hard to lead at the finish ahead of Kees Douze in runner up position for the second straight day. Peter Wright held steady in third to improve his series position. With 12-1-13 so far for Gorostegui, though definitely in the running, he was not yet making a big stir.

Wednesday, race four saw wind that was not settling in, resulting in postponement, followed by general recalls and more postponements. Sudden death was enforced on the fourth sequence, then instead of the starting signal a postponement was signaled. Eight boats that had been over early were deemed disqualified and directed to return to the harbor. They protested, requested redress, and were awarded average points by the jury.

On the fifth attempt, the fleet was away in a 15 knot breeze. Heinz Nixdork got the top mark first, only to be passed by Gastao Brun prior to the jibe mark. Brun opened up a considerable lead and had matters his own way from there on. As the race progressed, the wind increased, taking a couple of masts with it. Gorostegui finished third, firmly establishing himself as a contender for the series lead. With two races to go, and figuring a throwout, fewer than 20 points separated the first 10 boats.

Thursday was a great sailing day, the signals were on time and the start all clear. Bruno Marazzi turned the top mark first but Gorostegui took over and opened up a comfortable lead. Gorostegui’s win put him in the series lead, with Hagen now the only one who could catch the flying Spaniard.

Thunder and lightning greeted the sailors for the finale on Friday morning. After a general recall and line adjustment, the race got off. The western sky brightened and rain stopped after the first beat. Gorostegui made it clear what he had in mind by leading around the first three marks. On the last beat, John Albrechtson moved up from third to win. Crossing the line in a conservative third, Antonio Gorostegui and Jose Luis Doreste became the Star World Champions, with 15 points to spare.
