Results
The following results are from the Star Logs. Starting with 1977 frequently only yacht numbers were given. The last time both yacht numbers and yacht names were given was 1989. In later years sometimes, fleet designations were omitted. In these cases some of the more obvious fleet designations were supplied. Also from time to time only last names were supplied. First names, where known, were added.

Regatta Report
by Jane Pegel
During the 1984 World Championship, April 1-6, the weather was delighful. Generally there was an offshore breeze each morning that would diminish about 1130 and give way to the influence of the sea breeze. The exact timing, direction, and velocity of the wind varied.
The Championship festivities began with the launching of the fleet. Most equipment had been measured for the previousl week's European Spring Championship, but boats had been hauled for last minute sanding and polishing. That evening the gracious host warmed the sailors spirits to celebrate the opening of the World's and the prize giving for the European Springs.
Day 1 dawned cloudy with the wind northwest at 12 to 15 knots. by mid-day it dropped off and when the 79 boat fleet came to the line, they saw 8 to 10 knots out of the west. Vince Brun/Dave Shaw worked out a slight lead on the first beat and opened up from there. Andrew Menkart/Jim Kayle were second early on but could not hold off Achim Griese/Michael Marcour, who seemed to be coming though strong off their second place at European Springs.
The next day was also gray, at race time the wind was west at 8 to 10 knots. A port favored line caused one general recall. Hans Wallen blasted out of the center of the line on port tack, looking smart. Others, including the previous days winners, were caught at the port end, jibing and circling. Paul Cayard/Ken Keefe worked up the left side for the early lead as the wind grew to 15 knots. Josi Steinmayer/Reto Hellig made a comback to second. Dave Howlett/Tim Tavinor were third.
Day 3 saw wind from the west at under 8 knots at the start. The port favored line again caused problems. Hardest hit were Olle Johansson/Dag Hansen, hung up on an anchor line. Bill Buchan/Steve Erickson found the left side favorable and held a lead at the windward mark that they continued to increase for the rest of the afternoon. Per Baagoe/Peter Brogge were second and Werner Fritz/Thomas Budel were third. Previous series leaders Paul Cayard/Ken Keefe were unable to recover from a poor start and remained in the tank to use up their throwout. At regatta midpoint, Giorgio Gorla/Alfio Perboni led the regatta 7-4-11. Albino Fravessi/Carlo Bonetti had a 10-8-6 to put them next in line. The early race winners were also in contention with a throwout race yet to be designated.
The fourth race day had Menkart/Kayle out in front and covering nicely, lifting off the fleet. John Drew-Bear with Christian Flebbe enjoyed a good race, placing second. A third for Buchan/Erickson kept them in the running in spite of the first race DSQ. Gorla/Peraboni held steady with a fourth.
The longest day of the series was race day five, the wind being all over the place. The committee and the sailors played games for a while, going though several general recalls and postponements. Finally at 1650 the race began. Gorla/Peraboni took an early lead and all but sewed up the championship by moving out for a comfortable first.
The last day of racing had a forecast of light and variable winds which proved to be accurate. The committee postponed to wait for the sea breeze. The final race got underway under light air. The port end favored line made life difficult. Among the causalities was Bill Buchan, who was observed after the start on the back deck of his boat, whisker pole in hand, trying to free the anchor line. Gorla had made sure Cayard was smouthered at the start and when the two reached the first mark in the fifties and sixties, the title was virtually determined. Cayard eventually worked up to 28th, Gorla to 33rd. Mats Johansson/Bengt Bentgsson led all the way and worked out a huge lead to beat the time limit by 3 minutes.Second for Menkart/Kayle moved them into the series runner up spot.
