1989 World Championship - Porto Cervo, Italy
September 6-17, 1989
The following results are from the Star Logs. Starting with 1977 frequently only yacht numbers were given. The last time both yacht numbers and yacht names were given was 1989. In later years sometimes, fleet designations were omitted. In these cases some of the more obvious fleet designations were supplied. Also from time to time only last names were supplied. First names, where known, were added.

Regatta Report
by Harry Webster Walker
The main harbor and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda are located at the Village of Porto Cervo. Paul Cayard was asked what the weather in the Mediterranean might be, he answered that it would be light to moderate unless a Mistral came in and then it would blow solidly for three to six days, which it did. The race course itself was located about three miles north of the Porto Cervo harobor. The first couple of days it was calm in the harbor and then a broad reach out to the start. Days three, four, and five became a fast start from the harbor and a plane out to the start.
The first race was won by the very fast and always popular Anders Geert-Jensen. The race started in warm sunny weather with wind from the northwest after two abortive attempts and a very aggressive Star fleet. The start got off with a sudden death five minute rule. Fravezzi came from far left where there was a lift. Geert-Jensen with crew Just rounded the first mark in twenty-seventh place. At the second beat, the course was changed, and Mark Reynolds was leading with Geert-Jensen having pulled into tenth. On the last upwind leg Macdonald and Cayard were leading as they managed to get out of a wind hole. Geert-Jensen stayed left of them, and gained, to finish first in the race. He beat Cayard by one meter and Macdonald by four boat lengths.
Several teams started the second race at the boat end of the line and immediately went on port tack. The wind was moderate, and Bill Parks kept going right. The bulk of the fleet went left. Parks and crew Tom Londrigan kept going and going right. He went almost to the starboard lay line, caught the shift, and was so far ahead at the first mark that no one could catch him. Race two was won by Bill Parks.
Race three was much windier than the first two, perhaps 20-25 mph. It was won by Brazilian Torben Grael, the Olympic Bronze Medalist, and a great heavy air sailor. Second was Mark Ryenolds, the US Olympic Silver Medalist. Reynolds was declared to be PMS, but felt that he had not been over early so asked the jury for a hearing. After testimony of boats around him and review of the recordings of boats which had been called over, it was determined that a mistake had been made and he was reinstated to second place.
Alan Adler started the fourth race with a clear start 200 meters to leeward between Vince Brun and Roberto Ferrarese. As soon as the wind started to shift to the left, Brun, Macdonald and other boats to leeward started to tack, but only Brun and Macdonald passed in front of Adler. Adler and Farrarese waiting until a shift arrived and tacked. At the first mark, Ferrarese was fist, with Adler in second and Macdonald in third. In the reaches, Adler got very close to Ferrarese and he opened a good distance from the rest of the fleet. Adler played the shifts better than Ferrarese, who dropped to third, and entered the downwind leg with an easy lead on Macdonald. Nothing changed downwind and on the last beat.
The following two days were too windy to race. The fifth and sixth races were run as a double header. Race five started in very light air and the breeze built steadily. It was the "Brazilian Connection" pushing the race five winner Mats Johansson, with young Siemsen second and Adler third. Dino Pascolato, another Brazilian, was sixth just behind the fast Italian Ferrarese and Werner Fritz of Germany. Of these six there were a few places swapped back and forth after the first mark, but generally they go out front and held on.
Race six was windy, very windy, with 25 mph plus. Five boats were still in the hunt for the championship. Alan Adler and Nelson Falcao had a nice point lead, but since Adler had a DNF, he had to count this race. Ross Macdonald had not had a bad race up to this point. At the start, Macdonald started behind Mark Reynolds and Adler was to windward. Peter Siemsen led at the first mark with Grael in fourth and Reynolds in fifth. Reynolds rounded the last leeward mark right inside of Siemsen, who did not lower the jib halyard and ripped the grommet out of the head of the jib. Reynolds finished race six in fifteenth. On that race, Adler had run into a port tack boat going upwind and broke his mast. Macdonald had a bad race and had to use that race as a throwout to finish third overall in the series. Torbin Grael won race six with Seimen in second and Gorla in third.
A nervous Alan Adler paced the floor of the YCCS while the jury deliberated on this dismasting. They awarded him YMP points in the last race. Alan Adler and Nelson Falcao were declared winners of the 1989 World Championship.
