Regatta Report
By Bill Nichols and Jack McDermott, Staff Writers, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Alan Adler of Rio de Janeiro said he feels no pressure to repeat as champion of the Star Class World Championships, which was held off the south shore of Lake Erie. Adler said conditions on unpredictable Lake Erie are different from almost any other body of water. The venue is 2 1/2 miles out onto Lake Erie from the mouth of the Rocky River and Cleveland Yacht Club.Sailors from 18 countries are represented. Carl Buchan (making his first appearance in the Star World's) and crew Hugo Schreiner had little trouble winning the tune-up race on choppy Lake Erie. Torben Grael of Brazil made his presence known with a second place finish in the tune up race with crew Marcelo Ferreira.
Heavy winds, registering more than 30 knots, and intermittent showers forced postponement of the first race of the championship, putting off race one by a day. A repeat of the previous day forced the postponement of race one and race two. On the third day of racing, the race committee hoped to get in two races as the breeze went from 12 knots down to 7 knots. Torbel Grael won the first race of the series. In race two, Buchan and Schreiner won, and after three races led the series at the halfway mark. After three races, Ed Adams and George Iverson were in third place of the series. Mats Johansson of Sweden won the third race of the series with a strong finish. He and his crew Stefan Hemlin finished fifth in the second race. A shroud brokeand forced the team out of the first race.
At regatta midpoint Alejandro Abascal of Spain is in third place in the overall standings. Torben Grael is in fourth. After race four, Terry McLaughlin from Toronto led the series, Carl Buchan dropped to second overall. The fifth and sixth races were scheduled to happen on the same day, but were postponed due to lack of wind on Lake Erie, the fourth postponement in seven days. The race committe started the fifth race, when it looked good despite the rain. Then the course was cursed with wind shifts and the wind died. The committee tried to re-start, but there was no wind and the day was called off.
In the end, Torbel Grael and his crew Marcelo Ferreira won the 1990 Star Class World Championship. Grael and Ferreira rose the 15-18 knot winds from the northwest and Lake Erie waves that reach more then eight feet to a third in the fifth race and a seventh place finish in the sixth and final race. In second place was Bennie Anderson who had an 11th and 13th in the final two races, and finished just three-tenths of a point behind Grael.
