1991 World Championship - Cannes, France
October 9-20, 1991
The following results are from the Star Logs. Starting with 1977 frequently only yacht numbers were given. The last time both yacht numbers and yacht names were given was 1989. In later years sometimes, fleet designations were omitted. In these cases some of the more obvious fleet designations were supplied. Also from time to time only last names were supplied. First names, where known, were added.

Regatta Report
by Harry Webster Walker
The morning of the first race, the sailors were at the club at 10:00 for a harbor start and waited with nervous anticipation for the postponement to drop. By noon the sailors were sent off to the west to assemble for the start. Because of the great water depths starts were held close to shore. This first race had an excellent fair line and got 118 boats off with no recall with 15-20 knots of wind. Walker started on the pin end with Ed Adams and Vince Brun. Peter Siemsen with crew Pedro Camargo were to the left on starboard tack and held on while the rest bailed out to get to the right side of the course. Peter stayed left, banged the corner and at the first mark had a lead that wouldn’t quit. Abascal of Spain was second, Hagen of German third, and Raudaschel of Austria fourth.
On the second day of the regatta, there was thunder and lightning at 4:00 am but it cleared, and the sailors sat around under the postponement flag. Although there was a fair breeze from the north, there is no way that they can anchor a committee boat or set a line with the wind from the north. The water is to deep so the committee waited for the wind to go around. When a sea breeze comes in from the south or southeast, they can set up. In this second race, there was a driving rain, no visibility, high breezes, and big seas. There were many collisions but few were reported as protests. The race was won by Ross Macdonald who had a very good start at the pin end of the line. A few boats crossed them on port right at the start by Macdonald managed to be on the left of them, which was the favored side. On the first beat, Macdonald only tack four or five times and reached the first mark in first place. At the second reach the wind went around more to the north and that’s where Macdonalde really pulled out a big lead. On the last beat they protected the right side which seemed to be the way the wind was shift and opened a lead again, holding it to the finish. Second was Neeleman, a Norwegian and third was Alex Hagen.
The next day at 1:00 the committee shot the “go” gun and the sailors went into what was a clearing situation, they got to the starting area and had a postponement. Shortly they went into sequence, though within a couple of minutes of the start, about 100 boats were over the line. The committee postponed rather than issue a general recall. There were two more tries at a race and at 3:30 they cancelled the race, no race, not enough time.
The sailors all sat around the regatta court waiting for the breeze to come up the next day and it didn't look very promising. At noon they sailed out and raced under ideal conditions with 10-15 knots. Alex Hagen was holed at a port-starboard situation by Doreste of Spain and had to withdraw. Doreste also withdrew. Race three was won by Hans Voght, Jr.
In what was supposed to be the morning of the fourth race and after the beautiful day the day before, the sailors thought everything would be splendid. As they looked out, there was not a cloud in the sky, but they saw that the sea had lots of white caps. The sailors went out by 11:00 am into a very stiff breeze which increased in the next hour into a real blast known as a Mistral. The wind built to 30+ knots and after two vain attemps at getting the fleet started, the committee very wisely cancelled and then the sailors went back home. The next morning the Mistral was in full force again and racing was cancelled for the day.
The next day the sailors did not believe the forecast, they arrived at the yacht club about 9:00 am and were postponed for about 30 minutes. The committee would have to get one or two races off or there would be no series. The sailors were sent out in a pretty fresh breeze and after one general recall, the race started down by the end of the island and back into the bay. Walker played the middle while a big bunch went to the right and a big bunch went to the left. Torben Grael won this heavy air race, with Ferrarse in second and Raudaschi finishing third. That afternoon, the race committee took the fleet out again, ran a full Olympic course of 10.8 miles in a dying easterly and finished in the pitch black dark. Literally the man had to put lights on the sails and the numbers so he could see who was finishing. Benamati and Salini won this race beating D'Ali and Veggetti to the finish close to the shore and before the wind died.
The final reserve day arrived bright and shining with a light breeze from the south. The committee got the fleet off to a good start. There were about 70 boats out, the rest having packed up and left. First in this last race went to George Szabo III from San Diego, a young Star sailor, son of a Star sailor and the boy who had won the US Star Youth Championship earlier. A delightful young man, big smile, little fellow, and his crew also from San Diego, Julian Palocz. George was sailing the crew's boat and was the only American to win a daily first.
Italian Roberto Benamati won the Star Class Championship of 1991 and second place went to Torben Grael from Brazil. Third place went to Mark Reynolds of San Diego.
