Star Class Honoring the Past, Leading the Future
Part One – THE PRESIDENT’S MEDAL AWARD
On behalf of Star Class President Lars Grael, Tony Herrmann of the Racine Fleet presented The President’s Medal to Buddy and read the following statement.
“Buddy is arguably one of the most successful sailboat racers ever to grace our sport based on:
More importantly, Buddy brings to all of his sporting endeavors a level of dignity, respect, friendship, sharing go-fast tips and good humor that is appreciated byeveryone.”
The Star Class also recognized Gloria Melges, Buddy’s wonderful wife of 63 years – an accomplished sailor in her own right, with a beautiful silk Star Class scarf.
Part Two – YOUNG SAILOR AWARDS
Buddy teamed up with Amy Cermak – Racine Yacht Club Rear Commodore and Vice President of our Racine Yacht Club Youth Foundation - to award 8 members of our youth sailing program who participated in this Wednesday night race with special Yacht Club Burgees embroidered in gold – “Buddy Melges Gold Star Race”. Pictured in the photo is Sally Vannini receiving her award.
Part Three – GOLD STAR RACE AWARDS
Buddy awarded the winners of that Wednesday Star race, Don Schaefer skipper and Rob Walker crew with commemorative acrylic models engraved with the years ’78 & ’79 and boat number of his winning star.
Part Four – “BUDDY TIME STORIES”
For about an hour to a very attentive audience, Buddy-Did-What-Buddy-Does telling stories about courtship of his wife Gloria, the America’s Cup and winning Star Worlds and Olympic Medals as well as commitment to training.
